A quick update. I took the bendix mechanism to my local auto electrician today. This is what I learnt.
If you happen to own a small grinder you can reshape the the front of the teeth on the pinion gear. Or you can get your friendly local auto elec to do it for you. This is a relatively inexpensive exercise. Because I'm an idiot, I washed mine in diesel. This meant that it would have to be stripped and repacked with grease. The cost of stripping the bendix, replacing the bearings, repacking it with grease and grinding the teeth is around $60. The cost of a replacement was $95. I went the replacement option. Having said that, I notice the bearings on the replacement are made in Korea not Japan, so I don't think I will bin the old one just yet. Cheers, Ben.
