It has been a couple of weeks since I last posted, but here's a status update on the M101. I have stripped and repainted the axle, leaf springs, u-bolts, shocks, and various other parts and pieces. I have also cleaned and wire-brushed the underside of the tub, but there is some sort of thick protective coating that seems to be safely coating the steel. There is no rust at all underneath this thing, which is nice. I planned to strip and repaint that as well, but I don't see the need.

I also picked up a set of military lights, so I am looking forward to getting these converted to 12-volt and installed.

I have finished everything underneath, so I hope to start painting the tub tomorrow. Here are a few pics so far:

Almost Complete!

Well, there was some nice weather for spraying on Friday and Saturday, so I got all the painting finished up! I got several very solid coats on paint put on as well.

I still have a few items left to do: Reattach the brake lever (which is partially disassembled still), swap all bulbs with 12-volt, convert the front of the harness to a conventional plug, and a few even smaller odds and ends. After this, the tent part of the project will start.

Here are some pics of the progress...

I still have to install the brake lever and add a few bolts, but here she is so far:

Looking really good
I'll send you some more for "treatment"
Oh BTW your missing the star lockwashers under the bolts holding on the lights :flipoff2:

Very nice, I think you are doing a great job with this.

Are you planning on lining the tub at all? Making a lid? What else do you have planned down te road?

I bought a rooftop tent that I plan to mount to it via a hinged plywood deck that allows plenty of room for storage, yet allows the tent to be set up quickly. I have a design in mind, and it is actually pretty simple. I will start working on it after the holidays. I want it to be simple, inexpensive, and water resistant.

The lights: I bought them from a friend at work who happened to have a brand new set sitting in his garage. Total luck...

I also need to spend some quality time with my FJ60 before I dig too deep into the tent project; she seems to have developed an idling problem out of jealousy that I need to fix.

I will post pics as it progresses. Thanks for the compliments!

You should make sure to get one of the $200 roof top tents on sale right now in the vendor section. I have one and it is awesome. The "bad" part of the ladder won't even need to be used if it is mounted on a trailer.

As for the liner, yes, available at Wal mart, brush on type.

I used in on my FJ-40 and it stuck great for years.

I may have to give that stuff a shot. Thanks...

I did buy one of the $ 325 tents from Mel, so I hope that it holds up!

Well, I finally have fixed my FJ's idling problems (needed a carb rebuild and a good tune-up), so now I am back to working on the trailer. Today, I officially made the 12-volt conversion and have my lights working properly. Next week, I am going to start on the plywood deck and start the fun part, which is the tent. I can't wait to take this thing camping for this first time.

I'll post up some pics after the holidays.

Looks Great!!!!

restoration for sure. I wonder if the contract company who built these for DND are watching the fad of these trailers? Would be interestinging for the guys who built them to see soo much love and care put back into them.

These literally will be around forever.

Congrates on making it new again.

Thanks! I am in the process of getting this spare tire mounted underneath. I bought an FJ62 spare tire winch which I have mounted to the crossmember. I think this is an excellent place for the tire.

Yesterday, I cut the plywood deck and I hope to start mounting and hinging it this weekend.

Today I started on the interior trailer wood frame and got the deck down. I also fitted the tent up there, although I still have to seal and paint the deck before I mount the tent.

This design basically uses galvanized screws in 2x6s in structural areas for rigidity, and 2x4s in support areas. The hinges are also heavy duty galvanized for maximum strength. The deck seems solid as a rock. I'll post more pics as the project continues...
