With careful cutting, could the removed piece of deckplate been used as a lid? Just wondering aloud for others who might attempt...

I'd think that would make a good lid, it's already ribbed for strength in one direction, couple of cross braces would make it stiff in both directions. Good suggestion, I was idly thinking of what I would use for a lid if I wanted to do this.

Wow, that's very cool! I have definitely pondered doing something very similar, but access to it with existing drawers/bins right above it has been holding me back. But if I could get everything that's in the bins down below then that would surely solve it.. would just want to make sure a fridge still fits?

Don't really have anything else to add, so I'll just try to one up the CAD department. Here.. link right click, save as, then click yes a couple times and you can watch it spin around on your screen.

Thanks for the CAD link Nak.

The pics arn't coming through for me but that made it easy to visualize what Haffi was talking about. Pretty darn cool but I too wonder if that effects the structural integrity of the vehicle.

If you look at picture numer 3 in the first post you will see the cut away on the floor under the truck. It is upside down. I would not want to use that dirty thing as a lid.

Hopefully I will have time this weekend to finish the interior as I plan. I plan on replacing the original carpet with plywood, and make a lid from the same stuff. Then glue a new carpet over the wood.

I will post more pics when I´m finished.

nakman, cool 3-d image

where is your spare tire?

Uh, you could clean it, couldn'tcha? :D Just giving you crap, man. If I follow your lead, I'll assess the dirt on mine.

A little progress

Hi

Did a little work on the carco box tonight. Got some woodwork and carpeting done ;)

Looks good to me... tomorrow I plan on making the lids.

So 80's don't have LSPV's in Iceland?

It is ready ;)

I finished the project today. Its perfect ;)

I had the lid in two pieces. The aluminum on the top of the lid slides under the plywood on the floor and the lock locks it in place.

As you can see I can fit alot of stuff down there, all the stuff on the tailgate fits and there is room for a little more.

The lids are rattle free and locked so I can drive bumpy roads without worrying about getting my tools in the back of my neck.

That is a great project Haffi, and it turned out really nice.

Well done.

Thanks for the great Idea. I showed my wife the pictures and the first thing she said was "why dont you get your friend to make you something like that but make it an ice box and put a drain valve on it!":beer::beer::beer::beer:

Ahhh, the wife might be onto something......a storage/ice box when you need it!

Why does the phrase "nothing to declare" come to mind?

I predict a sharp spike in fireworks sales in Sonora over the next little while.

Straight outta the Honda Ridgeline, man!

And when I thought the same thought, I started scheming..."who do I know at Meridian Products who makes this thing?"

Haffi, awesome outcome.

Did you fasten to the truck solely with adhesive, or did you pop some rivets in there, too? Any concerns with "oil canning" or other types of noise?? Booming? Would putting Durabak or some other coating on the outside (for noise) be considered? (Since it's aluminum, it won't rust.)

A top-notch job!

(Oh, and for those considering the INS gambit and bringing stuff across our borders...don't use a nice shiny new aluminum hiding spot. The INS have all sorts of cameras and mirrors, and this would pop up like a beacon! Paint it or Durabak it first! :D )

Not that you would get caught but adding cargo capacity and hidden storage compartments is illegal in some states. I know it is illegal in Florida as they are concerned folks would use stuff like this for drugs. Not sure what the fine would be or if anyone actually cares if there isn't drugs or guns in the compartments.

I've thought of doing this many times. I keep coming back to the fact that whatever I put in there I'd need immediately in a stop. And unloading a packed truck on the side of the road is a PITA. I've even thought of using it for the spare tire. The advantage would be is your spare wouldn't get banged up and it would stay clean. Not sure if a 35 would fit in there anyway.

I need that spot for more fuel. Another winter project!

There are 22 rivets plus the adhesive ;)

On the inside it is covered with isulating camping matress, and I will cover the outside with some rust preventing coat. Both for rust preventing the cut trough the floor and noice dampening.
