That can definitely be the route, you're basically coming in off Afton Canyon Rd. That said, the true "start/end" of the trail is further west at Camp Cady. I think most people skip that section as there's not a lot to it, but you know... if you're a completionist you may want to check it out 😆.

Edit: was there a campsite location for Friday picked? I thought the spots posted previously were backside of little cowhole mountain, just past the purple/red line intersection. Not sure it makes sense for the group to camp that far north (orange/purple intersection - prob 30 mins off the trail each way).
Re Friday camp, yeah I thought it was going to be there at cowhide mountain too. So, I'm confused on that point.

Let play the camp spot by ear since if we have a lot of folks coming in at night or early on the morning the purple point maybe the best rally point.

Soooo maybe I missed it, but has a specific (GPS coordinates or address) meeting place and time for Friday been posted? I see stuff like maybe the Circle K or by the mountain or near that one cool tree and stuff along those lines, but nothing specific, unless I missed it.

So I'll ask you to keep it simple for this simple minded, easily confused guy who is not familiar with the area.......where and when are we meeting on Friday?

Time to tighten up the plan. Meeting spot for those driving up on Friday morning. 0900 and rolling at 0915 from the park and ride in Fallbrook, 15 and 76. Gas and snacks there.
Drive time is 2.5 hrs which puts us at the trail head about 1230. That include a quick stop in Barstow for fuel and lunch. Meet at Afton Rd and 15 area about 1300.

Afton Rd, Baker, CA 92309

Get our air down and start driving soon after that and our stopping point will be by Little Cowhole or Hanks mountain depending on those coming in. Figure we wheel and get to the camp site about 5ish.

Saturday morning out about 830 to 9ish and do like 60 miles with stops for adventures and sight seeing. Have some ideas of where to camp for the night but will see how close we are to those. Pot luck has been thrown out as a option... weight in who want to join.

Sunday same up and moving time with getting in to Laughlin area about 1500 to 1600 in the afternoon or sooner depending on the last 60ish miles.

If there is a particular spot you want to stop at please let me know and we will try working it in to the plan.

For potluck Saturday I'm planning on making tri tip over an open wood fire! And maybe cinnamon rolls for dessert!

I will update on the first page the items that everyone plans to bring for the potluck. If you other vehicles coming with you please let me know so I can put them on the first page as well so we can get a count of what we are going to have.

Irrelevant is going.

I'll bring chili

I plan on going, got some work finished on the cruiser, I can make 9:00 at the park and ride Friday to caravan up. I think Rich will be going as well, but can talk at the meeting tomorrow. I would like to hit the lava tubes and Fort Piute again, there cool stop. Is everyone staying the night in Laughlin? We have hit the Avai Resort and Casino, about a mile south of the trail end, rooms are about $26 a night. Then again it looks like room are the same in Laughlin, just a 15 mile drive more.

Thinking about camping out in the desert on Sunday night with MTNRNR rather than hitting the town, then heading home Monday morning from wherever we end up camping.

Yeah Sunday night we might stay out short of the end of the road and camp. Debbie and I are more into camping than going to a hotel (unless we freeze our asses off or get wet or something unexpected). Won't be able to participate in the potluck either cuz we are both vegan (had some bad heart tests couple years ago). I'll be at the meeting tonight.

Ok, Friday night camp. Justin and I were looking at the map. The purple waypoint is one of the spots mentioned earlier. It's right outside of Baker by a couple of miles. Little Cowhole Mtn is south of there (see map). Little Cowhole Mtn is farther from Baker and probably more difficult to find if anyone is coming in after dark. If people are coming out late in the day the Hanks Mountain sight might be easier for them to get to. Little Cowhole Mtn on the other hand is right off the Mojave Road (red line). So..... which is it?

Report found by Rich from the weather service today has the water crossing at Afton Canyon at 3.8 feet, or about 46 inches. That's a foot higher than my tires. Some may want to reconsider the crossing.

The bypass option would be to head back to the 15 and head east to Basin Rd, south from there and link back up with the trail just east of Basin Mine. I'd say we check it out, send @elripster through it, and then the snorkel-less guys like myself can decide there. Last time we went there were some over-exaggerated reports of the depth of the crossing.

I'm game!
