witch person and witch product? there are plenty of both in this thread

Mine just came today. So far I like the door LED's, though it isn't dark yet so I may change that opinion tonight. At any rate, I ordered 4 WLED-6 LED Bulb - white 0.60 $ 3.59 each. Those are for the doors.

I also ordered 2 WLED-6 LED Bulb - Amber, at $2.99 each I figured I'd try them in the doors to see if amber did anything for me... well no, they're not that bright and too focused, so I pulled them and put the white ones back in. Then I tried these ambers in my front corner lights, since I'm running the clear "Tyler lenses" up there. Again, much too focused, so I yanked them and put the normal amber bulbs back in.

The LED's generate a lot of light, but only directly in front of the bulb. This appears to be ok for the doors, but for the corner signals it actually made the corner lenses less effective, since I could only really see the amber light if directly in front of the truck. And compared to the other side, it was obvious this was not an upgrade.

Finally, I ordered 2 1165-A 12 Amber LED bulbs, at $4.99 each. These are direct replacements for the blinker bulbs, also the bulbs in the ARB bumper. Like the corners, however, the installation of this bulb in the "Tyler clear" turn signal made it virtually useless- it puts one bright spot on the inside of the plastic lens, but the rest of it still looks clear. Compared to the other side with a plain ol' amber 1156, where the entire thing is glowing amber. Again, the LED is not an upgrade here, I'm sticking with the more traditional looking bulbs for functionality and safety reasons, for my front corners and turn signals. Keeping the LED's in the doors though...

Oh: total order cost $35.32, including $5 for shipping. They came in a padded envelope, not a UPS box, fwiw. http://www.superbrightleds.com

I've installed the door LEDs from superbrightleds.com, but these have 6 LEDs, not 4 like RavenTai's. Part number for mine is WLED-6 LED bulb ($2.99 each).

The light output might be a little brighter with 6 LEDs, but the light pattern is very directional. If you turn off the dome lights and use only the door LEDs, the interior floor has many dark areas caused by shadows. The LEDs do put enough light on the ground when the door is open to see where to step. These LEDs complement George's dome/map LEDs very nicely. I'll be keeping mine.

Like Raven said, the greatest benefit of LEDs (at least these) is not the light output, but the reduced power draw (don't forget to replace the dome and map lights to truly achieve this).

BTW, I also purchased a 74 LED bulb ($1.19) from superbrightleds.com for the glove box. The bulb fits loosely in the socket and will fall when the glove box is slammed shut. Light output is the same as the standard bulb. I'm going to email superbright to see if I can get a replacement just in case mine is defective.

Are there any direct led replacement options for the dome lights and map lights or is George's product the only option??

Have some ideas for these LED’s in other places, George sells loose driver boards and Luxeon’s I would like to put two on the inside of the lift gate to give shadow free overhead light on the tailgate and surrounding areas, and somehow only come on with the lift gate being open (diode isolation?), a well lit tailgate would make a nice workstation for repairs or camp cooking loading/unloading reading ect haven’t figured out the details on that one yet

Also it really ticks me off that Toyota did not include an under hood light, one at each foreword corner of the hood facing the engine bay would light it nicely (very little shadow) for road repairs or just checking the fluids at the gas station, not sure how they hold up to the heat and moisture of that environment, I’ll have to ask George if anything can be done to seal them from moisture and if they can stand the heat, I assume the LED’s and driver boards can be separate? keepign the driver board in the cab would help, incandesents might be better here

Newer chevy trucks (I know for fact '98) have a gravity-switched underhood light. It is completely self contained (other than power supply). Fairly well sealed and very simple. May be cheap enough from the dealer to buy new. Make a LED driver board to fit the bulb and you have a very simple gravity actuated low draw light. Just needs +12v.

Superbrightleds.com has the dome LEDs (# 3022-4 LED Festoon bulb $2.34 each), but they will pale in comparison to the light output of George's. I don't think SBL sells map LEDs that will fit the cruiser. George's map LEDs are very very bright, so if you don't want to spend $93 (cost for 2 dome + map LEDs from George), just purchase George's map light and get the domes from SBL. You'll have plenty of light in the front half of the Cruiser and you'll have the benefits of reduced power draw.

I just got 2 maps and 2 domes from George. Going to install them tomorrow if it stops raining for a while.

I've had George's LED domes in my 80 since he first came out with them a year or two ago and have been very pleased. I picked up one map light for my rig and a map and pair of domes for the wife's.

My suggestion...for anyone considering getting LEDs is to get the door LEDs from superbrightleds.com and bite the bullet and get the good stuff from George for the overhead stuff. You will be very pleased with the light output.

Over the weekend I decided to test if infact switching to George's/SBL LEDs would allow me to keep the Cruiser's interior lights on without draining the battery. I'm using George's map and two dome lights, and SBL door lights.

I placed the map and both dome lights switches to the ON position and cracked open both driver and passenger doors so all four door lights would be on. Left it like this in my garage for over 48 hours without starting the Cruiser. No noticable depreciation in light output after 48 hours. Monday morning, Cruiser started right up without hesistation :bounce:!

Now I don't have to worry about having a dead battery because someone didn't shut the door properly, plus I don't have to keep turning the interior lights on/off when camping... just leave them on!

Thanks BigGunna. I just prefer the whiter light than that "dirty" yellow color and I am a broke college student so 93 bucks is alot of money to me!

Nice test BG, good to see the math actually works in real life, with the incandesent bulbs you would not have been able to start long before 48 hours

I was glad I had them in september as I slept in the 80 for a week with the back hatch open, that was just the 2 rear door leds and it was starrted most days, but it is nice not to have to worry about it.

only problem I had I finding enough stuff to covr them up and darken the interior for sleep.

Critter, the luxeon Led's George uses have a high output not matched in other LED's, if you can I would jump on them now before George stops making them.

LED dudes: I finally tackled one of the "not enough light" issues by installing a second set of LED"s to the door that points in towards the floor mat area. The result is pretty sweet, here is the full write-up that I did on the Rising Sun sight, but I'll upload a couple pics here too just for grims. Enjoy!

nakman,

Good thing I wasn't already selling expensive parts for the same function. ;p

Nice work!

Mot ;)

Nakman,

That is EXACTLY what I was looking for - more light in the front wheel well area. This mod looks simple and inexpensive to do. Thanks for the writeup!

John

Nice write up. I wonder if this is doable on a pre-95. We don't have door lights. I'm trying to recall if the open/close sensor is in the door or on the door jamb. I'll report back later if no one else has chimed in by then.
