I really wish I had used RTV like you did on my oil pan gasket, mine still leaks. Plus my "new" rear main may also be leaking. Gotta love these old 2F's :D

You haven't had any leaks have you?

^^ no leaks at all.. the Toyota RTV is really good stuff.

My ol 60 finally holds her fluids!

^^ no worries glad you enjoyed the pics.

The OME 2.5-3" setup is fantastic. Originally, after the install my rear was sitting slightly high, so rather than remove a rear leaf as many do (i wanted the rear end to remain stout for extreme loads and towing) I added a slightly longer front shackle over the OME shackle. If i had to do it again, seeing as how everyone favors the smallest shackle you can get for offroad clearance- i would go for an add-a-leaf in the front, to bring it up level with the rear.. to eliminate the Stinkbug stance which is very common with the OME kits. someday i may do that and swap back to the OME front shackle.

cheers

Thanks Orion. Prescott eh? lived there for 4 years

Nice work. This 60 is gonna have a lot of time left on her when you get done. Beautiful. Thanks for the pics I'm taking it all in as I turn into the mad scientist myself!

Thanks ham.

the truck now has 118,000 miles on it, runs better than ever, and basically just needs some fresh paint and rust work. Should last a long long time.

Just sent out an oil analysis to Blackstone Labs and i should hear back in about a week or so how shes looking on the inside.

Also put a roof basket on her, and ordered a rear bumper kit from Teton Cruisers.

i'll toss up some pics of that soon.

Gonna buld swingouts with a tire carrier, ladder and Jerry can holder behind the ladder.

Cheers

BLACKSTONE OIL LABS ANALYSIS UPDATE:

Here's what i got back on my last oil change:

MILO: Last we checked, Castrol GTX used sodium in its additive package, so hopefully that explains the
sodium found here. Sodium can also show antifreeze, and since Castrol's sodium typically reads ~150 ppm,
it's possible some of your sodium is from antifreeze. Wear metals look good and potassium is still low, so
we are not immediately concerned and will know more as you build trends. Note silicon, which could be from
an air filtration problem, so check out that system just in case. Suggest resampling at the next oil change for
another look sodium and silicon.

- So, im gonna do a few more samples so we can get some trending for the engine before we can determine what's what.

From what i can tell, that Antifreeze would be coming from a headgasket that lightly seeps Coolant into the oil.. or from some type of hairline crack in the head.

I'll do a few more samples of the oil before go pull the head for a new gasket and a valve job.

Gonna replace the air filter, hope that helps lower Silicon levels in the oil. - that could have also been from a few small vac leaks from rubber caps that wore out and starting leaking..

Cheers,

Milo

Great build Milo... next time I am out in "The Boat" I will have to hit you up. Sister-in-law and Brother-in-law live out there, teach at Lowell Whiteman, and we usually make a trip out every other year. Hoping that this year I have a 60 to make the trip out there with.

Starter Rebuild & Knuckle job

Been quite a while since I really wrenched on the Truck and posted up on my resto-thread. 2 Deployments will do that.

But recently I had some time to get back into it and sort out a few nagging issues on the rig.

I started by rebuilding my starter to sort out my intermittent starting problems. (cure the CLICK when i went to go turn the truck over)

fresh out of the rig:
BEFORE

after a light cleaning:

New Plunger:

and the main reason why my Rig didnt start consistently:

New starter contact on the left, the 30 year old piece on the right

I also had a very annoying transfer case shifter rattle that would drive most people nuts. I called Cruiser Dan and asked him to send me all of the bushings for the transfer case and I replaced them.

pictured are two that just wouldnt fit, but with some light trimming i got them to fit. Needless to say my transfer case shifter is rock solid now

30 years of Cruising later, it was time to service the knuckles on the rig.

My inner axle seals were completely shot and she was dripping a quagmire of grease and diff oil onto my garage floor. (did a full axle rebuild kit, including new Trunion bearings, wheel bearings, knuckle wipers and seals, spindle seals, all new gaskets, basically every seal in the whole setup and Marlin crawler inner axle seals.)

There are a million how to threads on Knuckle jobs so i wont bore anyone with the step by step, but I will post a few links that i found very helpful. Also, youtube is a tremendous aid with how to videos.

my starting "pile" of parts and all the pieces.

Torn all the way down:

Installed new Marlin Crawler inner axle seals

The old Birf:

(hey anyone concerned with the heat marks on that Birf? or do they look "heat treated" like that normally. I know its worn out but i'll replace em' when they finally go.

New stainless steel brake lines:

Bit of a mess in the garage:

New wheel bearings, and bearing packer packed with fresh grease

Old spindle:

New spindle gaskets with new seals:

New rotors, cleaned and painted hubs and all new wheel studs

Minty fresh:

Long story short, My rig has never been better. I am pretty happy knowing that it has fresh seals, all new bearings, gaskets and a properly sorted front axle.
It was easily the messiest job i've ever seen in my life but it was well worth the effort.
