I originally had a copper coil to cool the air coming from the compressor, but it wouldn't be pretty with the new setup. Its not intended to be, and it doesn't have much internal surface area, but this PS cooler I added inline does seem to drop the temperature of the air flowing through it considerably.

Thanks for the information. I have seen it done on shop air compressors, but hadn't thought about doing it for the Yorks, but it makes a lot of sense.

This weekend I tried to prepare the truck a little more for the Pismo trip. Last year i had a few ladies in the back and went through a few bumps and at one point a girl hit her head on the roll cage. I was aware that it was super dangerous, and I tried to keep them out of the back but I ended up giving way to peer pressure.

Anyways I ordered a bunch of stuff to try to prevent that from happening again:

upload_2018-10-31_9-46-52.webp

There was a few more boxes of stuff but you get the idea.

I was really excited about the roll bar wrapping material, but I have to say I was sorely disappointed! It wound not stretch very evenly, the Velcro was impossible to get straight, and the tube junctions looked like s***.

In the end I used the softer foam material in the back of the truck for passengers, and the stiffer SFI rated material up front. Up front I put the SFI rated stuff on the cage, and a layer of foam on top to soften it up a bit. My justification for this is that I have helmets and 4 point harnesses for the front if I plan on doing something stupid, but I would never do anything with people in the back that would be any safer with helmets. There is only the troop seats back there, so it would be just as dangerous even with a helmet on.

After giving up on the roll bar wrap I ended up at home depot buying 20 rolls of 3M 700 series vinyl tape (electrical tape). I ordered some 3M 2" but I grew impatient and started wrapping with the 3/4" stuff.

Anything is better than exposed 2" steel tubes, and my last half hearted attempt with pluming insulation.

Hopefully people can tell its a Toyota now and not a Jeep?

I've got something to mount to the ambulance door hinge holes, and some new SS brake lines being made right now for an install before I leave for Pismo Beach Friday AM!

My rear body panels are 12 Gauge, additionally there is a reinforcement plate behind it. The Lower point goes through a larger rear cross member that is 1/4" wall square tubing. I also added an extra support "cushion" to support the weight in the lower body cross member. There is also an additional support rubber where the rear ambulance door hinge used to go. All the fasteners pass through and have nylock nuts on the other side.

I have some large hinges if the stock hinges fail, but like I said its only an experiment. It feels very rigid and constrained like this believe it or not.

Sweet! I hope it works for you. I would be worried about the upper mount over time, but it sounds like the bottom mount is super strong. You could always connect your reinforcement plate to the cage if you needed more strength.

Yes I agree, we'll see what happens. I would be more worried about he hinge its self than the body failing in this particular case. The load is well distributed, and the material is very thick.

Final changes before Pismo:
Added a tool to use the ambulance door hinge holes:

Hopefully I don't get pulled over for it :)

More importantly I replaced all the brake lines and adapters with properly made SS lines from a local shop. Here's the front:
upload_2018-11-8_9-41-36.webp

I was always nervous because the lines were so cobbled together before. There were SS flex lines cantilevered off 4" straight steel hard lines on each end. Just asking for fatigue failure. I'm pretty happy about how that all turned out. I'll add some pictures of it all installed later if anyone is curious.

The front suspension has settled in after driving a few days, I think I like how level it is now. I would raise the rear 1" if I could still get in the garage. This is as close as I can get it while still getting in the door, and having 4" of upward suspension travel to the bump stops in the front:

Hit the sand just after dark. After watching a friend struggle to climb one dune I lined up to it in 2.3 low range and before I knew it i was shifting into 4th gear and got way more air than I was intending. Wish I had that on video!

My buddy had some issues with his truck, so we yanked him pretty hard a few times and bent my rear bumper/ cross member while towing back to camp. That will be a fun fix, I'm looking forward to beefing that area up now.

We went back to camp and partied for a few hours and went to bed fairly early becuase my dad had to get up a 3AM NY time (midnight for me) and was pretty tired.

Woke up to a nice view Saturday:

Anyways it was an awesome time and the only damage I found so far was the rear cross member from towing, and my stereo amplifier died somehow.

We had an absolute blast:

Ignore my runny nose, it was chilly out!

We watched the NASCAR race in town and after both Toyota's in the final 8 made it to Homestead we hit the road southbound. We stopped in Santa Barbara for some seafood, and then straight to LAX where my dads flight left at 11PM.

We had a really good time this year and hopefully can make it back again for the future!

This Thanksgiving I wasn't able to see family so I worked on fixing a few more things on the truck.

Pulled the oil pan to reseal it and add a bung for the oil temperature, and my catch can return:

Pulled the heat ex changers to have them pressure tested and to service the top end of the engine:

Pulled the front dress off:

All this stuff is only 7k miles old, and has a recommended 80k service interval. I'm going to just change it while its apart.

Check out this camshaft damper, not something I would have expected to see in a production engine:

Getting it torn down further:

These Unit Injector engines had camshaft lobe wear issues over 150k miles. I noticed some wear on the base circle, and figured it was time for a change. Here are the Unit injector rocker arms for those unfamiliar:

Getting down to the rout of the problem:
upload_2018-11-25_20-49-57.webp

Here's a healthy lobe and above it a worn base circle:

Here's a worn lobe:

You can see the missing chamfer.

The new camshaft is a OEM revised replacement. Its a billet camshaft with some sort of revisions to prevent premature wear. If I just get 150K out of the new setup I'll be more than happy. The original lifters had some dish to them. The cam buckets were also revised by VW, and the new ones have some colored coating.

Naked head:

It's nice that VW built this engine to be serviceable.
Camshaft bearings:

Bearing wear looks very good and even. A few locations into the bronze layer, but no scoring and very little contamination. Its crazy to see how much the unit injectors load the camshaft, and overpower the valve springs opposite them causing these wear patterns.
