I was thinking about welding together a small steel setup that would be removable so a queen bed could be in the back of an 80. Has anyone done something like this? Thanks for any help
I've thought long and hard about this. It'd be awesome if you could have it flat, fold up, or something, then pop up to go over the wheel wells (and match the height of the 2nd row seats if they're laid flat).
That's a JDM 80. You can get a tax break or cheaper plate by having it equipped as a camper in Japan, can't quite remember what.
There are a variety of these conversions that I've seen on the web, but I suspect none of it is available in the US. In Japan, probably no longer available new, but you might be able to come up with someone's take-outs if you have a contact.
As 'green stated, it's a JDM dealer installed option, I have yet to see two the same.
As for making one, mine is pretty basic compared to some of the other ones I've seen. the main support stands are something like 1 1/2 pipe that bolt to some threaded inserts in the floor where the cargo straps (I think these are OEM) bolts are. Then there two pressed wood cross frames that lie across these ans fasted down with hand knobs. Then some padded boards lie on top of those, with velcro pads to keep them from sliding around.
It has a little sink and gas stove that are bolted to the frame during transport.
At our last club meeting, I noticed there was an aluminum framed set up on the floor shop. I have no idea if it was for sale or not, but might be worth a call to Steve at EBI Cruiser Parts (mudguppy here on 'mud).
Mine is somewhat ghetto compared to these above. When I go and plan on sleeping in the back I take out the rear seats. I have a platform that just goes over the dropped area where the second row passengers feet would be. Small wood platform with dowel legs. WOrks great and I can put a full (not queen but a full) size matress between the wheel wells. This allows me to be able to shut the tailgate as well and have plenty of room to stretch out. I'm 6'.
