I thought a thread like this could be entertaining. I bought a 1980 FJ45 in July and drove it until a few weeks ago when I parked it for the winter :(. Now that it's parked I thought I would fix a few minor issues. Here is a couple things I found on mine but I'm sure there are numerous others out there that have found worse.
Let's hear about them!!

I had a brake adjuster that was seized so when I pulled the wheel off to take it apart and free it up, I noticed half an inch of the brake shoes were sticking out past the edge of the drum. Took the drum and shoes off to see what was going on and found the spindle mounted outboard of the baking plate instead of inboard of the backing plate. Figured I'd better check the other side and of course it was wrong too.
:worms:

While I had that apart I noticed the brake shoes and springs were installed wrong. I thought I'd better check the rears and they were wrong too. Supposedly the brakes were done recently by a well known shop here in town??

hahaha that's sssoooo bad.

hmmm, pulled apart my front axle yesterday to put 60 disc's on it and low and behold, I have runny grease. it just ran out. I was surprised to find that it was not diff oil thankfully. also surprised to find that the axle components were indeed fine.

My first LC was a 76' 40. The PO had installed a GM Rochester 2 barrel carb on the 2F. It had a nice adapter and probably ran very good when first installed. But not so well buy the time I purchased it.

This truck had a GM rochester on it too. The linkage was pretty micky mouse, the choke wasn't hooked up and it had a vacuum leak. Fortunatley I had a toyota carb of a little earlier 2F, just had to plug the fuel return port on it to make it a single line carb. I had the proper linkage off a parts truck so it all worked out.

Um i got a better one then those!!!

On my 1st 67 the PO had made a wood carb spacer for it. Ill dig up a pic lol.

Yah i was pretty green to cruisers when i bought it so i didnt even notice lol!!! It ran surprisingly good. I ditched that s***e carb and had a proper one put on ran even better after... I feel worse for the PO as he paid 9k for it just from pictures lol. I took it off his hands for 4k had it for 10 years then sold it for $4800 after it had been sitting for 4 years. I really dont miss that 40 at all

nice manifold insulator also!

my story is an F135 with no oil filter, it was removed to make room for the snow plow hydraulic pump.

How long have you got? I've got 30 years of horror stories. The more recent ones have their own threads.

The hookah 40 that plumbed the POSITIVE crankcase ventilation hose (complete with fuel-rich vapor) straight into the exhaust head pipe! :nuke:

Or the lava lamp 40, where I scooped all the ATF the hapless owner poured into the brake master cylinder, poured in fresh brake fluid, and tripped out on the little blobs of red percolating up through the gold.

The 350engine 'attached' to the frame with 3/8" bolts through 1.25" holes with 1/4 slabs of rubber acting as both cushions and washers! OMG

The circle-track 40, where the PO replaced a rear spring hanger, but it wasn't even with the other side, so the rear axle was not perpendicular to the frame.

Saginaw gearboxes 'attached' with carriage bolts and wingnuts.

Transmissions attached with carriage bolts and wingnuts.

I could go on for hours.

I've been on a lot of those threads. I like the names you've given to some of the wacky stuff you've found. Very entertaining:popcorn:

Ill have to post pics of the SBC conversion that came into my buddies shop........it uses rebar(no rubber) for motor mounts.......the shifters were under the heater, hole chopped out of floor, bear cans used to cover the holes.....and thats just the start.......

Live...from the Mark's Off Road Wall of Shame:

You can see where the rubber was slowly being punched thru the oversized hole. I flipped the bolt around to show that it was also not long enough to pass thru the frame mount, engine mount, and reach the nyloc!:bang:

I vote for just re-titling this thread The Wall of Shame thread. I guarantee I will have regular contributions. I like to think of them as job security!

The motor mount fiasco was attached to a cracked TH350, fulltime NP203 chain drive that the PO installed, shifted the TC into hi-lock, and sold...without a t-case lever!:bang: Probably my biggest 'whack' job to straighten out this year.

THE HALL OF SAHAME would be an interesting if not scary section. I had a few finds also on a few of the FJ40 I have had but failed to document them by pictures, but everyday some Land Cruiser owner finds something that just is not right.
