Oil pan was dropped, cleaned, JB weld on the crack to the rear corner flange and ospho applied. The “leak” that I thought was my RMS was probably this crack. The old gasket was surprisingly easy to remove and almost came out in 1 piece. New OEM oil pan gasket (PN 12151-61010) and FIPG used per FSM. The rear main seal (PN 90311-99065) replaced. With my Sadie on Jimmy’s lift and all those pesky in the way parts now out of the way, it was a straight shot replacing the RMS. 5 minutes top.

The week before I had already removed the front n rear driveshafts and dropped them off for some growing and shorting. I needed the new DS to measure -flange to flange- of 26 11/16” on the front and 42 3/8” on the rear. But I can confirm later. Spider bearings to be replaced PRN.
Flywheel was also dropped off at a machinist for resurfacing, you know, “since I’m in here”.
New Aisin clutch kit (# CKT-032) and new press plate bolts (PN 90119-08134) x6.

I’m keeping my 6/1984 2F bellhousing and 3 pic transmission mounts so that will clock the H55 a few degrees to the right, I think? Can’t forget to grind for clearance on the 2F bellhousing to make space for the H55

Got the 5 speed round knob (PN 33504-60040) and the H55 shifter cane (PN 33530-60160) with boot n bushing from City Racer, @Racer65 . “Just” gotta heat and bend the cane for clearing the dash and probably my knee.

I also bought a post-85 transmission hump cover from @jkdur728 . The post-85 hump gives me the clearance needed for the t-case shift linkage w/o having to cut into mine

I can’t thank Jim enough for helping (read doing most of the work) with this swap. His Barn, tools and knowledge have been key

And then in the middle of this transmission replacement, my wife and I bust south to old Mexico for a week. For those folks that aren’t scared to travel in Mexico, go to Isla Holbox. You can thank me later

Cheers
Alex

On my way. You got beer?

But for reals, Jimmy’s did all the “heavy lifting” of this work. He’s already done a handful of 60’s and has the correct tools. Plus that lift..game changer

And your 87 should be “easier”. No driveshaft length changing the 3F bellhousing and transmission mounts will clock better (I think, didn’t really research 3F) and no need to buy different t-case linkage (again, not too sure about the later years)
As I’m sure you know, new and OEM H55 are available from your friendly neighborhood Toyota dealer. Make friends w the parts manager for a discount price?
Or support the Mud members that also sell OEM?
But whatever, pull the trigger. Start gathering the parts.
Next for me is changing the diff gearing? But I’m gunna put in some miles first.

Your 87 is the “easiest” H55F conversion out there.
Same bell houding ( slight mods )
Same flywheel, clutch, fork and hydraulics
Same Tcase and linkage.
Same cross member and mount
Same drive shafts.

You’ll need:
H55F
Shift lever and knob
5th gear oiler
Tcase rebuild kit
Gear oil
Time, place and tools.

Recommendations?!
Full-spline input gear
Updated drain/fill plugs.

Make sure you check/replace if needed:
U-joints
Trans mount
Clutch
Rear main seal
Oil pan gasket
Clutch hydraulics

If it needs a clutch, resurface the flywheel and install new pressure plate bolts.

Happy to help. We have all of these parts in stock.

My clutch started slipping.. I'm pretty easy on clutches so should be able to get by until I get some dough saved.
With the lower 1st gear in the h55 you won't have any trouble running 33's but probably won't get much use out of 5th until you swap for 4.10's.

Why wouldn’t you use 5th gear?!

Wait, did I just spit out some FJ60 5 speed conversion knowledge that was then confirmed (I was mostly correct, give me a break I’m learning) by THE Georg?!??

Maybe I’ve read someone’s past conversation post and I’m misremembering - confusing their information for my own?

Maybe I’ve had muchos Tequilas and need to get out of the Mexican sun?

Alex, the clutch is in. Will stab the unit manana. Only have a pic of the resurfaced flywheel. Will snap one of the clutch in the AM. View attachment 2831085
The only other time I have want to flee Mexico this bad was Acuña in the 90’s. I very much want to be a part of getting her buttoned up and driving.
Don’t tell my wife, but Ive had a dream about Sadie the last few nights 😬. I hope she thinks of me as much as I’m thinking about her. lol

Ha. I definitely understand that. No worries about Sadie. Just think of it as a spa day for Sadie while daddy’s out of town
