Is lifting a rig with longer shackles not good for the suspension in general? or.....
Please teach me!

if you plan on wheeling it, the longer shackles will hang down farther.
the fronts will bang into obsticles, rocks, big logs, river banks. i think you get the idea.
and the rears will drag over just about anything that the fronts have already hit.
also when you use longer shackles on the front, you have know changed your steering geometry.

;)

So if I put an add-a-leaf under all four corners, would I still have the rear sag? Or would the new stiffness of the adda leafs keep them all pretty honest?

Would another alternative be to re-arch all four springs and add-a-leaf under the rear two to get the desired effect?

Starting to understand...

first, are your springs flat??
my rears were starting to go negative ^ instead of being flat _____
i got 4 inches of lift from a full length add a leaf.
rearching will only fade back to flat after awhile. plus a rearched stock spring wont give you a real good shackle angle.

i get a real nice ride out of my 60 now.

if you got the cash, go new lifted springs.
if not,and your on a budget, spend the $125.00 from MAF and go full length adds.
you wont be sorry... :D

2 front Dakkar springs are $250 :)

so longer shackles do hang lower?

Depends on your point of view. They hang down from the frame more. The lower end of the shackle is at the same height above the ground as a shorter shackle. Since the truck sits higher, you think you can drive over taller obsticales, and you can, as long as you don't run into them first with the longer shackles.

Clear as mud?

Makes sense to me...

Just don't head straight at big tall things, and remember the shape of your underbody when wheeling.

Now, let me get this stupid newb question out of the way and on with my learning curve:

Where do suspension shims go and what do they do exactly? How do you tell what degree shim you'll need?

The shims are designed to keep the caster angle. If you use longer shakles than stock height in your TLC you loose caster, because the front end of the springs goes down, and the axle rotate to get better front drive shaft angle .. but this iisue is was in detriment of your caster.

I hope to me to have been able to explain ...

Shims go between leaf spring and spring perches. Fat part forward.

am i correct?

OK .. you can see between diff spring perches and spring the alum shim

They do hang a bit lower but not much. Because you are angling the spring down you are losing a bit of clearace. The reason they hang lower is the same reason your caster changes. Frame side stays constant. With a 2.5" lift you are increasing the spacing between the axle and the bumpstop by about 1" (a bit more) but you are raising the frame up 1.25" and lowering the spring 1.25"...

IT'S A CHEAP ALTERNATIVE ( caps) to a full set of springs if you dont have the cash.

the only thing is i'm not a big fan of longer shackles for lifting a rig.

I agree. I'm hoping to get an inch or so of lift when I install the long Add-A-Leafs (after settlage), but that's more like gaining height back from springs that've sagged flat. My main reason for the AALs is stronger springs for when I eventually add tons of weight to my truck after the SOR is done hopefully next summer.

Mini hi-jack...

Tapage, where did you get the shackles? Were they part of a reversal kit?

edit: just saw the picture properties

No problem .. I already have it, Shackle Reversal in my HJ-60 and those chackles come with the SR kit .. great upgrade in my concept. :)
