So what made you decide on the long ones over the short ones? I was reading on the site, and it says the short ones are good for heavier loads, whereas the long ones offer a smoother ride. Or are the long ones good for heavier loads as well? Also, where in the springs did you add these leaves in?

the long leaves are made for smooth ride, but are very strong, maybe you can carri very well, but not always ..

My opinion is, add a leaf are this only one leave, do not abuse of it .. but in my ycase with the add a leaf you enjoy as well, with very good flex ..

i also kept the

metal wraps that go around the leafs open, so the leafs will hang and open up for droop on articulation.
they are still on the sides so the springs wont fan out.

Were those welded onto the top leaf or riveted?

to the bottom of the springs.
just put a little heat on them.
they bend pretty easy.

Er, yeah, bottom. Me dumb

Why not? Are they too rigid?

Yea, for me they were the most miserable couple of months driving I've experienced. Absolute washboard ride. If I remember, I think I later took off one or both of the lower leafs. No difference.

But, I could take corners like an Indy car ;) , well you know what I mean.

Let me qualify though, I had the Rancho shorties. The MAF's that 2bad is using might be different entirely.

my fronts are rancho

i just think the weight in the front helps the ride out..

For anyone thinking about using the short leaves.... :D

DON'T :flipoff2:

.
I have the shorties on the rear of my 60. Don't do it. They're coming off. Not sure yet if I''m replacing 'em with long add-a-leafs or the OME ones.

Hey 2badfjs, could you maybe post some installation instructions for us rookies? Also what else did you need along with the add-a-leaf. I'm thinking of adding to the front since they are practically flat untill I can afford some alcans.

lets see.........

the right way would be to remove the springs from the rig.
i opted not to(i've done these so many times,i can do them on the rig)
if your SOA,and doing this in the drive, you better have a way to secure you rig.
jack stands.BIG ONES!! that why i bought the 10 ton stands, they go up to 47 inches.if you have a floor jack, that helps also.c-clamps, 1 or 2 big ones.

let go with removing the springs:
1) get yourself a map gas kit(kinda like propane torch)
one at a time heat the spring pins up and the bushings(what this does is char the bushings and makes it easier to remove the pins,on the pivot end of the spring, remember to remove the retaining bolt that holds the pin in place. look you'll see it)
pry bar and dead blow hammer the pins out(this is the hadest part of the whole job) be patient!
go to the shackle end of the spring, remove the one plate of the shackle, and heat and beat, just like the other end.
step 0) i forgot,remove the u-bolts from the axle.
hard to explain, but you need your rig jacked up so the axle/tires are just off the ground, jack stand the axle so i doesnt go anywhere. remove tires
OK step whatever.. ;) now that your springs are off the rig,c-clamp the springs a couple inches away from the center pin.
you will need to bend the spring clamps open that wrap the springs
remove the pin anyway you can.(i cut mine off)
an add a leaf kit will give you new center pins.
back off on the c-clamp so the springs release.
keep them facing the way they come off, they are off-set from center.
with your springs apart, the new leaf should end up being the third leaf from the top of the pak.
use a drift, something other than the new bolt provided to center all the leafs in the pak and clamp them again with the c-clamp.
once they are all compressed and aligned, install new center bolt(c-clamp should still be holding springs together)
tighten center bolt,tighten c-clamp,tighten center bolt,tighten c-clamp,tighten center bolt.
remove c-clamp,install new bushings(grease them up)
install springs

HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!!!

and i got 4 inches out of my adds.
measure your ride hieght front and rear before you do this.
make sure your not going to be nose high when done.
otherwise do the rears also. ;)

We need a complete writeup with pics, preferably in PDF format :flipoff2:

*ducking*

Great Thread guys!! Especially the write up 2bad! This thread came up on search and answered all my Q's. I have a badly rear-sagging FJ60 due to the lighter SBC and heavy-ass roof rack.

I was thinking of leveling it with long add-a-leafs in the rear and shackle lifting the whole rig to get a cheap, sturdy, moderate lift all around.

Reasonable? Whaddaya think fellas?

IT'S A CHEAP ALTERNATIVE ( caps) to a full set of springs if you dont have the cash.

the only thing is i'm not a big fan of longer shackles for lifting a rig.
