If I could achieve these same results, I'd be perfectly happy. What set up?
You won't get these results with anything plug and play. Thats full retrofit territory.

Looks like the 'KenSun' product has a better review rating:

Amazon.com: 55w Kensun HID Xenon Conversion Kit "All Bulb Sizes and Colors" with Digital Ballasts - H1 - 4300k: Automotive

Are HID's going to melt my headlight housings as some folks suggest?

I cant speak for what the 55w ones might do, that reason is why I went with the 35w version. I am absolutely satisfied and I am a super picky person about headlights (both the light they throw and the ability to aim the light). I have a 55w HID version in my HELLA 700s, and they do get plenty hot.

Note: one piece advice I'd give is to skip the $35-50 amazon and ebay HID kits. They're junk.

Have you used any of them in your truck? Curious statement just because of the 4 major versions of the HID kits on Amazon, each have like 2500 reviews that are pretty close to 5-star. I don't have anything invested in them, other than being satisfied with mine, but I don't necessarily understand why they would be junk, especially for the money.

I am sure there are plenty of modifications that can be made to get peak performance, but spending nearly 4 times the money and heavily modifying the lens just doesn't seem like a huge return on investment. I changed my fog lights to Cree LED 4" lights and the combo with the HID is great. For when I really really need light, I tied a 20" lCREE LED light bar into the high beam relay (works with the highs). Everyone's needs are probably different, I live in the desert and don't really deal with rain storms.

I will try and post up some photos tomorrow. Either way, the OP stated he was looking for something plug and play.

Since you mentioned this :D.

The number of reviews isn't always a good indicator as there are companies who pay people to generate fake reviews. There are a few good sites out there that can help provide some additional context around these reviews, here is one of them > Fakespot | Analyze and identify fake reviews.

Kind of a neat widget. So I plugged my link into it, said it had a 90% "Fakespot Grade", which is an "A". I don't doubt there is fake stuff out there, but that one clearly seems to be legit. I am going to stick with my suggestion, for the money, and almost no modification, those HIDs are a very good value for the lenses on the LX470.

I have used those, xentec and ddm tuning; all the cheaply made Chinese bargain brands before I paid for a better option. Their 35w ballasts are barely putting out 27w and the bulbs far inferior.

Here is the photo I took this morning. I wanted to wait until I was out in the sticks, so there were no other lights. Dawn was starting to break, but it was still very dark on the road. I cropped the image but did not adjust the exposure.

So clearly there are different levels of satisfaction with the HID kits. I think most would agree that this style is going to produce way more lumens then any standard H1 halogen style. The merrits of different HID kits and retrofitting lenses could probably be an endless debate, so that would depend on the users budget and apetite to modify.

^^^^^^^ That is excellent lighting. So...it sounds like only 'marginal' gains (if any) are possible by just replacing bulbs in stock configuration?

IF that is the case.... then it shoots my "plug and play" constraints right out of the saddle. I suppose I need to look at the least challenging set-up to change out what I have now.

I live in a rural area off of a very dark Farm to Market road. It is not unusual to have Deer, Feral Hogs, Coyotes, Coons, etc.... dart across the road in front of me. So I really NEED something that will allow me see a good ways down the road. It isn't always possible to have my high beams on, since there is a fair amount of vehicular traffic on this road until about 9 p.m.

Lots of good information posted so far. Thanks to each of you.

Flint.

I would 100% go with a HID conversion kit. I got these from Amazon (LINK), for $40 the difference is not even close to comparable with anything else. The LX470 has the projector lens which is necessary with these types of lights. It is 90% plug and play, you just need to drill a hole in the plastic cap on the back of the light housing which the wires run through. The blue hue you are referring to comes from the how the halogen bulbs are doped. They have color charts, but if you see something like "6000K" that will be the blue color you DON'T want, the ones I linked are 4300K which is pure white, maybe even a tiny yellowish like John Deer bulbs you referenced earlier. The lower the the "XXXX K" the more yellow it will be.

I hate not being able to see at night, these bulbs are just unreal. I drive a lot out in the middle of no where, open range desert, at night, where cows are a huge danger. When I turn on the brights "Philips 9005", other than the pattern changing (more spread), there isn't much difference on the road just because the normal lights are so bright. Make sure you properly adjust your aim/cut-off after install. Read the reviews on the link, the warranty is great and so is the customer service. I ordered (2) more of the 55w versions afterward to convert my Hella 700s to HIDs.
The link doesn’t work. Please could you share the name or another ink?

X2, updated link for this? Both my headlights sent out within a week of each other

I feel your pain Flint. Yes there is the lx database upgrade and maybe i haven’t spent too much trying to learn it but it’s just lots of links without a clear specification. I know folks have done so much to invest in sharing these resources and i am extremely thankful. However, since i am not the most inclined regarding repairs and too broke for the luke kits, i’m kind of stuck using the stock headlights. maybe one day i will get to it. hell, i would even pay somebody to walk through the steps with me and guide me through it. if anybody is interested, pm me.
