Are you swapping in the 14B attached to the H41 only to replace it with a H55 later?

Yeah, I haven't got my hands on the H55 yet, was hoping to get it tomorrow, but that is not likely as I'm still struggling to get it all bolted up.

Even if I pick it up this week, I'm not 100% on its condition, so it may need a rebuild, and when that happens I'll drop it in.

Can someone explain why the power steering line runs across the front and then returns?

As Dieseler said, for cooling. I added an automatic gear box cooler from a Mazda to mine after I blew up the pump from running larger tyres and that seemed to fix the problem for good. I don't think that line is quite up to teh task of cooling in Australia with the bigger tyres.

You are coming along pretty well. Given the Crowies were not in the GF, SURELY you could have found at least one or two mates to help out; guess you need to put a telly in your shop:D

I finally got that FJ62 axle under my LX - what a difference! Always fun to get a bit of wrenching done.

Ring Rodney at Just Wrecking and tell him you are a mate of mine. He has a good H55 with transfer case for a BJ42 (with the elusive 40 series top loader) which he is saving for me. Tell him that I said you could have it if you want it and I'll bet he will give it to you for my price. Tell me what he wants for it and I can see if it is the same - or email me.

Love MUD!

Thanks Josh,

I did give Rod a call a few weeks back when I was looking at off-loading the Hilux. He mentioned that he had a H55, but wanted $1800. If you want it, I'd be happy to hold it in my shed for your return to SA.

I thought you had the 60 series axle in already - maybe that was just the rear?

Progress on the 14b - I've got it all bolted in now, I'm just in the process of routing the P/S lines and the vacuum lines for the brakes. Once I have that sorted, I'll have to come up with something for the return fuel line - I'm open for suggestions.

The next issue I'll have to tackle is the battery tray - the P/S pump on the 14b must be mechanical, and the P/S line runs over the top of the chassis rail - directly where the battery tray bolts to the frame, i might have to cut out a section to make it fit.

My price is a bit lower than that, I'll give him a ring and see if he'll come down a tad. He emailed me the other day to say that he has two now and wondered if I wanted both - surely he'd be happy to move one of them.

I had the rear axle in but not the front - now I have both! The 2.5" wider stance is fantastic. I cannot believe what a difference it made. My mate's shed is at the end of a 1 mile dirt road/track that is rough as guts and it was chaulk and cheese going there and back; much smoother coming back down with the wider front axle. I am SO glad I did the swap.

Any pics on the power steering and fuel return line? What about using the return line from a 70 series?

Any news on the tyres? Just let me know if you need me to get anything for this project from here.

Can I get my return fuel line to here?

Is one of these a return to the fuel tank?

Will have to modify the fan shroud and work out some new radiator hoses.

Would like to see if I can put the P/S reservoir here

My first thought is what about using your old power steering pump and making a simple bracket to mount it where it was on the 3B? Otherwise, just make sure that there is enough clearance from the frame that you will not crush that line when the frame flexes off road.

That plastic bit on the driver's side is just an expansion tank but one of those lines is a return line to that tank so I don't see any reason why you could not tee into that. Chris K. would be a great bloke to ask about that or Locky. Email me if you need their numbers. Locky is intercooling his rig right now and is intimately familiar with the fuel system.

That's interesting about the fan shroud - I would have thought they were all the same. Does not look like it will be too tough though. I guess it gives you the perfect excuse to powder coat the new shroud:D

Whose 13bt is that in the photo? I want that engine!

Bit off topic, but I just took a photo of the new front axle out in the car park of my office to give you an idea of the width. Sorry it is such a crappy shot but it is early morning here and I had to block the sun with my finger.

Josh,

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to swing past Chris's workshop once I get it running this weekend.

Will see how the P/S pump goes, I still have the 3b setup, so if needed, I'll swap it over.

I like the stance on Lexie, not sure how the nanny state would react to that width (might kick off a conversation with an engineer here in SA - I don't want any issues). But it looks like a great, functional mod.

That's why I waited until Igot it here to do the swap. I'm sure I could get it certified with Chris welding it, but it is a big hasle and not cheap. Then I would have to widen the guards to keep the tyres from attracting any unwanted 'safety officer' attention and the list goes on.

It is a fantastic mod though. The more I drive it the more happy I am that I did it. Lexie now no longer wanders AT ALL and even stopping hard at a light with a rutted section of bitumin does not cause the steering wheel to dance around. I think it must be because the 60 series axles are now the same width as most cars (except for the new Hilux which seems to have the same width as the freighter which brought our stuff here). I have not done and serious off roading yet, but if the way it takes corners now is any indication, I'd bet I can take her to 35° without any pucker.

So you reckon you will get your rig running this weekend?! That's fantastic! I can't wait to hear how you like it. Take her up to Lofty and see how she does(c: That was always my test with Lexie - of course now my garage is at 7,000' so it is all relative. When do you plan to turbo charge her? Chris is in Robe for the weekend at Goode's farm, but should be back next week.

Can you email your landline to me? I can ring your land line for free from my mobile but ringing your mobile requires selling Lexie to settle the bill...

I have been able to swap the top of the thermostat housing with the old one from the 3b, (the top now faces the passenger side) so the top radiator hose is the standard one from the old engine - this is really beneficial, as I already have a spare.

The bottom hose is a little different, because of the location of the P/S pump. I have a couple of right angle hoses and connectors so that it comes up the side of the fan shroud.

I have temporarily setup the power steering high pressure line to run under the oil sump. This will only be there until I can get the local hydraulic shop to make up some proper lines/hoses.

Help needed

I connected up the battery to the starter motor, tried to turn it over.

It only cranks maybe a quarter of a turn. :whoops:

I'm thinking that it might be something out of alignment - but the engine shouldn't turn at all if that is the case.

I have put in the 3b starter motor, because the one on the 14b had a broken/snapped bolt. So I think that I'll put the original one back in tonight/tomorrow and see if that makes a difference.

any other suggestions?

Also have to fit the clutch rod to the clutch release fork.

Hi dancar, sorry for not responding to your email yet I work away from home so sometimes it may take me a while to get back to you.

You will need a 14b starter as they are slightly different, I am using the 3b starter but I also used the backing plate (the plate between the bell housing and the block) from the 3b which is different from the 14b. I also have a 5 speed though so what applied to my swap may not apply to yours.

I managed to use standard radiator hoses but I think I used a second top hose on the bottom and chopped it (but my memory is a little fuzzy), but I also went to a thermo fan so I don't have a shroud, I don't know if this option will work for you.

As for the fuel lines, p/steer lines etc... I will hopefully get around to taking some photos today and will post them, hope some of this helps.

G'day BEE-JAY - no probs re the email.

Question for you if you can confirm while looking at you P/S setup and return fuel line. Can you check out this electrical connector and confirm what it is (located just near the return line)?

I think I have found why it's not cranking, battery drops to 6V, so it's on charge at the moment.
