On your 1FZFE for sale...when was the head gasket replaced?

Andrew

It is due. Great compression, but I only had it a couple days before I took it to the shop, so I don't know a ton about the engine. I can get you in touch with my mechanic if you want to ask questions.

Thanks! I'll tell you what...just keep in mind the fuel economy. I swapped mine expecting vast improvement, but I average 11-12 MPG in the city...maybe 16 on the freeway going long distances. Maybe you'll do much better with the fuel/cylinder management technology.

yep - definitely the wrong reason for any engine swap. They never improve economy.

What's funny is that I am getting about 16 on the highway and around 13-14 in the city. I am also running a 5.3l so as you can see, there's no real difference in economy versus engine size. You just have a good bit more power.

Thanks. I will keep that in mind. I would have to say that my goal is power first and foremost. I would much rather have a powerful but inefficient truck than a slow AND inefficient truck.

i agree - the power gain is what it's about for me. Economy hasn't really changed because the LS motors are so much more efficient. GM did it right with these motors.

You guys swapping in the larger motors are making me want to find 6.0l shortblock and swap it in place of my aluminum 5.3l block.

Hey There! I'm in Stephens City and would love to see your ride. I have a '94 that I'm just getting started on. More importantly would love a good mechanic out this way. Enjoying the thread....

We can definitely hook up sometime soon and talk. I have a some work I will be starting once I pick her up tomorrow, but should have her out and about very soon. Stay in touch.

Pm me and I will get you my mechanics info. He works on a lot of rock crawlers.

I guess I should put it to the forum. Am I out of line on what I am asking for this engine and transmission? Do me a favor and give me some feedback. I would like to move this engine and tranny in the near future. Thanks!! Have them listed on eBay for $1275.00.

that's pretty reasonable if you can back up the history on the motor. If not, you might have to come down. It's really a matter of what someone is willing to pay and how bad they need it.

Thanks. My mechanic said he was very surprised at how solid the engine still is for having 225,000 miles on it, but I don't have much beyond that. It ran great when I drove it for the few days prior to the swap. Very strong and smooth shifting. I am willing to move this thing at a very reasonable price to not have to deal with storage of it, so I am ready to entertain offers. :-)

225k is like its halfway, it can go 100k+ with some minor Pm

For the GM gurus in the group:

This is what I think I have distilled over the last couple weeks:

Given: If I want to run a chevy aluminum V8 petrol block motor and the 6 speed auto trans in my '97 80 with the original Toy transfer case, I need to run the 6l80e trans, as Marks Adaptors currently only has an adaptor for that 6-speed auto trans to our transfer case. And no one else makes such an adaptor. (Correct?)

Given: The 6L80e trans really needs a Gen IV motor (e.g., LS2 or LS3) to effectively connect up with electronically and function. (Correct?)

If so, then: I need a Gen IV alum block gas motor and 6L80e trans. (Correct?)

Of these engine-trans combos as they came in cars and trucks, some have truck intake manifolds, and the motor accessory belt spacing varies from close to the block to further out in different vehicles. I expect the truck manifolds provide more low end torque, but will they work with our hood height spacing? I expect to change the oil pan.

Considering all the above, my main questions are:
---What would be the ideal donor vehicle to pull the engine-trans-harness-ECM-pedal-etc out of to transplant in an 80?
--Do I want the truck intake manifold?
--What belt spacing is ideal?
-- What are the various 6.0 and 6.2 L alum block motor choices that fulfill the above and came with the 6L80e trans? (LS2, LS3, L76, any others?)

Thanks, Jon

Ok, set up an album on photobucket with a photo to get the ball rolling. Here is the link.

I will add more pics soon.

Unfortunately delivery of my rig was delayed due to a couple of missing weather strips, but I should finally get her tomorrow. I threw a couple more pics up. I should be able to get some more pics posted tomorrow.

Actually Marks4wd offers several options regarding adaptors for tranny selection. I know they also offer for the 4 speeds as well. You can go with just about any donor vehicle on this depending on your budget. A fair amount of fabrication work was still necessary in my swap, so be prepared. A popular selection that offers solid torque as well would be the Trailblazer SS. I happened to be drawn to the DoD addition offered on the Pontiac G8, but lucked out and wound up with a nicer set up that I expected when I received a G8 GXP dropout. Fuel economy is still undetermined as I haven't been able to drive it yet. I will try to post more details on my swap very soon. Currently responding on my iPhone, so it is cumbersome and slow to type.

But, of you definitely want a six speed, the 6L80e is the route to go in my opinion. However it is a very expensive tranny to do any work on as it is pretty high tech (at least that is what I have been told).

I am, by no stretch of the imagination an expert on this stuff though. But there are some great guys on here that can offer more knowledge and direction than I can. Starting a thread asking for 6 speed selection advice might be a good idea.

Lol, I meant, I am NOT, by any stretch... An expert.

Cool. Thanks jwdodd1.

I used to have a Tundra, and a 2uz-fe V-8 seemed like a good choice for an 80 swap (ala Slee), particularly out of 2003-2007 100 series LC (with the 5 speed trans, assuming that is correct and it would work). But the LS2/LS3 (alum block) motors with a 6 speed 6l80e now has really caught my interest.

Do you expect to get cruise control back? Thanks again.
