Hello there.

I bought a 1998 LC100 awhile ago and I have been experiencing sudden and short loss of power where the car holds for a bit and then accelerate (I notice it after shifting gears). It was no big deal for me until three days ago when the car lost most of the power and CEL came on. The car would move very slowly with regular throutle press and would not drive regularly until I hit the button after flooring the throutle. After that, the car on next trip come back regular with the occasional hold and no CEL.

I have been trying to read the ECU for codes or leads but nothing came out of the port, something I suspect related to the car being meddle east specific and me using an obd ii to pull the codes.

I'm thinking something related to the throutle but then it could also be a coil. The problem as I see it is not consistent to be a bad coil but I'm not sure.

Any suggestions and help is appreciated.

The car 1998 with 380K Km. Manual V8.

Thanks.
Mohammed

I had a similar issue earlier this year with my '99. With mine, the throttle body sensor went bad so it could not tell where I had the throttle unless it was floored. Basically, I had idle or full (or close to) throttle. My CEL did come on and a code was thrown. Let me find my paperwork and I can at least let you know the name of the part that was replaced. Hope this helps, good luck!

More than likely the TPS....throttle position sensor

Bama, that's correct; I just checked the paperwork. Thx!

Thank you guys for your help. I truly appreciate it.

I suspected something similar and your comments put my doubts to rest regarding the cause of the issue. The strange thing is that the CEL only came once with the extreme case I described earlier. Right now there's no CEL though I get the occasional hesitation from the car.

Also, during that case, I was able to get the car only up to 50mph while it was floored and in fifth gear. Would that be consistent with the TPS diagnosis? Maybe the car was in a starving mode of sort? Or would that indicate a sign of another issue?

Thanks again guys. Now on to find the parts and clean the throutle body while at it.

Your truck is a manual trans? I'd love to see interior pics and learn more.

An interesting and very informative thread related to TPS and APPS issues: https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/tps-apps-problems.127474/

Didn't come up when I researched the issue. Might help future searches.

Now I have to figure out whether it's the TPS or APPS that I have not working properly. I sure hope it's the TPS as it seems cheaper and easier to fix.

Yes. I'll happly take some pictures of the truck and post them in the pictures thread. It's gonna be later as it's late in the night right now. I'll post a link here for it.

You should have a code stored even if your cel is now off. I had the same situation/symptoms and techstream found a fault code for the apps. Troubling that you aren't able to pull a code. Are you using the toyota software or a generic obd2 tester?

I'm using two different obd ii readers. I've looked into techstream but the website indicated that it's based on obdii. I wasn't able to ID what protocol non us cars use or at least MENA ones. With the BT obds I tried, the protocols didn't probably match the output I have. Any leads to solve this issue are appreciated.

Do you have a vci cable? OBDii to usb. It is worth picking one up if you can wait and the problem isn't so persistent that its killing you. Otherwise you should be able to get a mechanic/dealer to check the codes for you without much hassle.

Lots of sources out there for cables that ship with software.

or software alone if you have the cable.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. I'd say it's a toss-up between your apps and tps unless you can get that code. I gather that the symptoms are identical. No power, limp mode, being able to floor it and get power...

Thanks for your help Mach5, very helpful lead for the mini vci. Since they charge $25 for a computer check over here, I don't mind taking a gamble with the cable. Do you know the mini cable uses the same protocols as the obdii or is the techstream program going to handle that issue? It would be nice to be able to play with the dealer only options. I shouldn't get too excited about it yet.

Do I have to do get a genuine sensor or OEM part is up for the task in this case?

I don't know much about the obdii protocols or compatibility issues. I can only tell you what worked for me.
I bought this cable. Free, fairly quick shipping from China. Pick up some interior led's for the truck while you're at it.

There are cables on amazon as well. They all seem to be the same Chinese made cheapies but they work.

I picked up an OEM apps from Cdan through the forum here for half the price the local dealers wanted. I haven't seen a third-party apps anywhere but there are a number of replacement options for the tps, around 60$ US.

Rock auto has a good website for sourcing out parts and replacements for just about everything. It is a good starting point and their prices are about the best in North America.

I imagine ebay might be better for you once you have the part numbers you need.

Here's another link I found helpful, if it comes to it.

I just got my shipment from the US which included a mini vci and a TPS. I'll be installing the techstream on tomorrow and hopefully it'll confirm that it's the TPS and not the APPS. I got the TPS from advanced auto parts as an SMP aftermarket and it has toyota denso printed on it. Thanks again for your help, Mach5. And everyone who helped as well.

you need a j2534 compatible device to use techstream, ive used a kvaser in the past (hybrid work)

I dont know how to edit yet, but obdII is peanuts compared to what techstream can do. Techstream reads toyota proprietary CAN messages, and OBDII is generic. Think of it as OBDII- you have a bad o2 sensor vs Techstream- the 3rd most fan in your hybrid battery pack is pulling too much resistance.

Thank you guys. I'm really excited to get this working but as of today, I wasn't able to connect it to a windows 8. I followed the directions on rav4 website for setting up tech stream with 64bit windows. Everything seemed OK until I connected everything and got the couldn't connect to the VIM massage. I tested the connections through techstream help section and got all red colors. I'll try an xp computer next and chase this thing to the end.

what device did you use?

So I got the cable to work and now I have got the p1121 code along with other codes as well. the research on this yield both the TPS &APPS as possible solutions for it. The wording of the code description got me confused:" accelerator position sensor range"!any thoughts?
