i'm doing some investigation on lockers and wondering what people of paid to have them installed and for the parts and everything out the door. And also what options there are for lockers is there any option for an electric locker or what what are you guys think?

Harrop (elocker, pricey) or arb. Can do an fj rear locker third. Make sure you add on gears as the stock ones break. Will run you $3-5k depending.

Ken at Gear Installs @gearinstalls.com is a very handy fellow if you want to do a DIY install but you are not comfortable with the gear install or setting up the carrier.

He offers a long distance set up if you send him the carriers via Fed Ex Ground, reasonably priced. His service significantly reduces effort and risk of DIY. He can do regear and anything else while he is in there.

Ken does not sell parts and has no brand bias. You can see lots of install photos on his website wwwmgearinstalls .com - including ARB, Harrop, OEM Toyota, etc.

As the Harrop guys over here, shoot me an email and I can tell you our experience. Both my partner and I have them in our rigs and love em.

Good luck!

I just want a rear. So I was thinking ARB. I'm pretty handy but not comfortable with doing the complete install. I like the ability to have somone else at least set up the carrier. I've heard of all kinds of prices for complete install with compressor, from $1300-1800.

Do yourself a favor and get rid of the stock gears, even if you get aftermarket at the same ratio. The stock rear will blow up... Just a matter of time

I wonder if this is why mine had an entire new rear axle by lexus at 130k before i bought it ...do you know if the replacement was any better then the original?

the factory 3.73 are flawed. They will break. the bevel depth on those gears provides very little strength. If you wheel, they WILL fail. Just a matter of time.

Is common in the FJ. The 8.0 rear is weak due to the gear and setup compared to vehicle weight. Coupled with what I will call a bad gearing choice from the factory.

You haven't seen the 5 or 6 trucks that wheel having to replace gears in the last 10 months? I was one of them...

How built where they?

by the time you do a junkyard you can pay for a new set of good gears. If you increased tire size you can get back to stock gearing at the same time, which will make it a MUCH better driving experience. I made it from 2009 until this year so you may never break, but then again...

So many preventative items to put on the rig. Upgraded skids to replace the OEM $1200, New gears, what about 2K for that and a locker. All to avoid the potential of something breaking or getting damaged on the trail. This is why I am so careful with my rig on the trail. Not a young man out to prove how cool it is. Just enjoying the journey. Its a expensive journey if you buy all this stuff.

True Dankunz. I was recently embarrassed by an open diff 4 door jeep with stock everything!!! He walked right up this dirt embankment with no slip. I made it up after about 5 attempts. He also has very little wheeling experience. So now I'm looking into a locker.
So back to the topic. What are you all thinking for locker installed with air pump? and maybe gears?
