Hi All,
Lurking here a long time. Currently own a 1991 JDM LJ78 with 2 LTE and auto box.
Basically the exhaust has split in 2 and I'm going to build a new one.
Existing one routes under the auto box pan and then down the LHS.
It looks odd, as the section under the gearbox would be prone to damage I'd have thought. I'm guessing it was rerouted at some stage.
Any of you guys have photos of the stock exhaust route?

I don't think I have any photos of the underside of either of mine with the stock exhaust, but it should go through the RH wheel well, down the RH side of the transmission and then over the transfer case and down the LH inside frame to go over the rear axle.

@jmcg , I wrestled with this for a bit, and decided to tuck a "glass pack / cherry bomb" style muffler just behind the passenger seat and parallel to the frame rails. The turbo does a nice job of quieting things down on the 2LT and the glass pack dials it down just a bit more. I think you will be happy with that setup. It is not loud at all and I get about 22 mpg with 33" tires. I was getting close to 24 mpg with 31" tires. Any muffler shop should be able to fab it up for $300 -500 dollars these days. Mine is about 9 years old now. I brought my own glass pack to the shop and he only charged me $200 to bend and weld it in 9 years ago.

Turbo is on the RHS of the vehicle and the it is hard to tuck the exhaust close to the frame on the right side (Although, some people like the side pipe look, I do not). The exhaust pipe will then bend over the drive shaft toward the LHS perpendicular to the frame rails. Exhaust will exit on the LHS behind the rear tire. Again, the "Glasspack" would be tucked under below the passenger seat and gives you a lot more room than the stock muffler. There are aftermarket systems from Germany and Italy available on Ebay if you feel like paying the shipping, but any decent exhaust shop should be able to hook you up. Good luck.
