Some days the project moves forward in leaps and bounds… Some days I feel happy when I get three parts installed.

A pillar trim and grab handles on driver’s side…

I was able to get a little bit more time at the barn today. I got several more things mocked up. The entire dashboard skeleton is in place.

The dash is held in place at the bottom of the windshield by six weird little M6 x 1.0 bolts. They are the same gently curved ones that are all over the factory soft top I did on my 74 series. I needed to obtain M6x1.0 speed nuts, thank you Dorman/AutoZone, and @coldtaco who got it all in place yesterday. My 13 year old actually helped bolt it all up.

Actual tech question:

Anyone know where the thermistor wire plugs into the main harness? I see nothing that even remotely looks like a fit for this. Does it come off of the accessory dash harness? Any guidance would be appreciated.

@RHINO do you have a pic? If I can get a picture I can look for connectors and build one.

Or if anyone has a spare….holla please.

I really appreciate that, taking out the box sucks.

boom!! see how quick that was?

ok so, our configs are different but that plug picks up the whole system.

my config as follows
the loom going up and right is the amplifyer
down and right is the blower motor
down and left is the thermister

Boom goes the dynamite indeed.

So the a/c amp plugs into the sub-harness, not the main harness?

I’ll have to look at the 74 series and see. It’s currently living up at @davegonz ‘s house.

there are different configurations over the years, but i'm sure its still a sub harness as the plug looks the same. if you think about the way its assembled at the factory, modular.

edit: in your last pic, the large dark gray plug, i assume its emmission control related as thats location in the main harness they all pull from. do you know?

I’ll dig up the a/c amp this week. I think the blower motor comes off of my main harness closer to the passenger door.

Thanks for tearing apart your glove box on a Sunday night.

I’ll keep sorting out the mysteries.

I did mock up the dash pod. It makes me happy.

Also, the HDJ79 FTE pedal mounts right up. I’ll need to make a bracket for the top, and I should be able to use the existing HZJ79 throttle cable/bracket holes.

The hand throttle cable is….slightly too long.

it is too long, but not really, you just let the extra tuck in nicely. i believe they did that when the 80(105) series phased in, one part number.

I started digging more into the air-conditioning set ups. It appears that there is a change at 1/2007, with the birth of the wide nose/VDJ motor.

Two generations of a/c in the 79 series appear to be:

1999-1/2007:

Cooler assembly 88510-60510
Expansion valve 88515-60040
A/C amplifier 88650-60141
Thermistor 88625-20060
Cooler harness 88605-60582

1/2007-6/2009:

3/2009 HZJ79 (my truck)

Cooler assembly 88510-6A440
Expansion valve 88515-12090
A/C amplifier 88560-60C50
Thermistor 88625-60200 (not a typo)
Cooler harness? Cannot find

I think the harness in my truck is 2001-era. If so, I may be able to get my hands on one of those cooler subassembly harnesses, and pick up an earlier thermistor and earlier AC amplifier and make it all work.

I’ll look around and see.

Does anyone know if I could just splice the correct plug onto my existing later version thermistor? I have no idea how to look up thermistor specifications/resistance/impedance or whatever it measures.

Just fyi ,anyone looking for a oem ac for these later cabs @Delancy has one of these for sale nib .

Sorry about hijacking your tread Galen

i dont know enough about the newer trucks to answer that directly. however, the thermister is measuring restance and in this system is literally an on/off switch to shut off the compressor should something go awry, like a freezing coil. i would bet the different part numbers are simply the two different plugs on the wiring and the thermister is the same.

i dont know restance numbers to check or look at, but i'm confident in this application its being used as a simple switch and you can wire it in a mixed component system.

Visually, the thermistor is a totally different design. There are good pictures on Partsouq of the differences between the pre-and post 2007 system and components.

If I am able to find an A/C sub harness, and have it work with my main harness, I will try just repinning/re plugging a thermistor.
