Great thread. Really good ideas. I am heading to Guatemala and have heard that limb risers are a necessity on the jungle trails we will be traveling on. The trick to my situation is that I have the ARB Sahara bumper instead of the commercial one. No bar work above the lights to hook to. I thought about using a couple stout stainless CB mounts at the hood/inner fender point close to the front. But several other threads suggest that is a problem waiting to happen. I would tend to agree.

The Sahara bar has a couple mounting holes in the top of the bumper that I believe are used for antennas or lights. I have been thinking about mounting a bar vertically from one of the holes to get high enough to clear the hood. My concern is that the bar might very well bend over under strain and hit the hood too. Any suggestions out there on how to tackle this?

Thanks,

Paul,

Time to loose the Sahara bar and pick up a combo bar.... LOL. I honestly dont have any good info but wish you the best and hope you return to update us on what you do!

Been thinking the same thing Paul, just got to stop by a shop and have the metal cut, already have all the parts I need. The south you get a lot of thick trails also. Best of luck and make sure to post pictures

they do work well for the deep gouging stuff, but you will still get pin striped regardless. That being said, i keep mine on and the do help.

I'd probably add a bracket to the fender bolts under the hood, then poke something up through the crack. Similar to our antenna brackets, but not as big. Just needs to be thick enough to not bend too easy, yet thin enough to not touch the hood- would be a close one, but I bet you could do it!

OK, here is what I came up with. My first plan was to use a similar bracket mentioned just above. I have a similar one on my CB antenna and they are very nice indeed. I am sure they would work fine. I hesitation that direction is the stress back and forth in that small gap and what it might do to the hood and the fender if something really gets into the riser. So I went a different route. Better or worse, I am not sure.

The Sahara bar has a couple holes pre drilled in the flat plane below the headlights. The furthest out is equivalent to 5/8". I mounted a couple pieces of 5/8" threaded rod 12" long, with fender washers top and bottom of the bumper, lock washer on bottom and tensioned with two nuts. On top I sleeved the rod with 5/8" ID tubing topped with a nut. I fabricated a couple 12 gauge straps, one back into the engine compartment and one as a mounting point for the cable. The brace goes under the hood and is bolted down the the connection between the inner fender and the radiator apron. There is an empty hole there readily available. I topped the whole thing with another nut to complete the assembly. The cable is 3/16", combined with stainless steel quick realeases and turnbuckles. The cables use aluminum compression fittings and stainless eye bolts to the rack.

The result is one incredibly stout mounting point. It raises to the roof line pretty well, and I think it will do the job. Not the prettiest thing every made, no doubt there. But functional. One draw back is I am not able to use the hood when installed. I can remove them in about a minute, so not that big a deal. Here are a couple photos.

Bumping this thread. Why don't we see more of these on Land Cruiser's and LX's?? With the narrow trails around where I live branches do tend to smack my windshield on occasion. Unfortunately the images posted by the OP in the beginning are not showing up for some reason but I would love to see other examples. I might be making myself a pair in the future.
