As a proud owner of my 94 J80, I would like to keep my rig in shipshape. Also I don't want to hear my wife complaining something like "You said it's a reliable truck......told you not to buy something that old." LOL. So let's talk about maintenance issue. I started wrenching when I bought this truck two years ago. Before, I know nothing about car maintenance except oil change every so often. The previous owner gave me a complete service record of the vehicle. So Now I am trying to create a comprehensive list to check against that to see what need to be checked or replaced down the road. You will notice there are a lot of question marks since I simply don't have enough experience. Please help me out, chime in. Maybe someone has already compile something similar. If so please point me to the right direction.
Despite the long list below, I think my most urgent concern is confirm or verify how often to do the following: Engine oil, oil filter & drain plug gasket-6month or 5000miles; Coolant flush, ATF, brake fluid, differential fluid-2 year or 30,000miles; Fuel filter-30,000 miles; Front axle- 60,000 miles;
Below is the longer list. Feel free to chime in!

My head started spinning, just looking at all the things I have not done yet. Dang, I thought I baselined pretty good. Well, back to work.
Engine oil every five thousand miles. Some change based on Black Stone oil analysis. Some go a LONG tome between changes.
Lubrication of drive shaft every other oil change.
Emissions: only when a code is thrown or something rusts through. Denso O2 sensors.
Suspension at 300,000 (shocks only)
Fuel filter sock in the tank, twice in 340K
Axle when they leak.
All other things under the hood when a code is thrown or the vacuum hoses look like crap.
Alignment, as needed.
Airbag inspection every ten years (never once crossed my mind).
Wash in stream on trip into the mountains. Vacuum takes away the musky smell, no way I'm doing that...

If it leaks, I add oil. If it gushes, I replace the gasket. If it uses more oil than gas, I rebuild the top end.

WHew, time for #6:beer:

Go to 80 series faq, also you can search for info on mud. It's all out there, looks like you got some reading to do.

Is it some kinda fiat or something? :hillbilly:

I'd like to point out that you make @NLXTACY seem like a neglectful slacker. Jesus dude. OCD much?!

Dude, drive it! What everyone else said. When it leaks, fix it. Change the oil from time to time. Change the coolant from time to time. Change the diff fluid from time to time. Check the transmission fluid from time to time. Look at hoses and belts and replace when they look suspect. The truck will tell you when she needs love.

MUDsessive–compulsive disorder (MCD) is a mental disorder where people feel the need to check things repeatedly, perform certain routine preventative maintence repeatedly (called "PM"), or have certain thoughts about wheel stud failure repeatedly. People are unable to control either the thoughts or the activities for more than a short period of time. Common activities include lifting the front end and checking 12:00 and 6:00, inspecting the radiator cap, and smelling exhaust fumes upon start-up. Some may have difficulty throwing old parts out. These activities occur to such a degree that the person's daily life is negatively affected and fear of leaving the garage is inevitable.[1] Often they forego wheeling excursions due to fear of the unknown problem that may arise. Most adults realize that the behaviors do not make sense, but they continue to check lug nuts daily.

I'm not that bad at all :flipoff2:

Hell, there are a bunch of things I'll just wait til they snap. Wheel studs for example :flipoff2:

This was pretty funny...

I could understand why they snapped though. You spent how many years trying to figure out why you kept overheating. Who has time to check torque settings when you are overheating all of the time?!?!?!

I found the owner’s manual this morning and read it on the bus to work. It covers most of my concerns very well. Adding some components (front axle, PHH, Rear main seal, fusible link and etc.) discussed in other posts, I think I am all set. Other than that, as responses in this post, check and fix if there is symptom. Thanks for everybody providing useful information!

I have a 2005 Honda Pilot manual(Never paid attention to it though). Comparing the two manuals, I found out the spark plugs in J80 is recommended to be replaced every 3 years/30,000miles and no brake fluid change service called out. For Pilot, 105,000 miles for spark plugs and 3 years for brake fluid independent of mileage. Wondering what causes the difference.

Check your brake fluid. T should be clear. If it isn't, change it.

The Pilot spark plugs are most likely platinum and will last longer (supposedly). That's why Honda says let them go for 105k.

You probably bought a good 80 if it came with a with an"complete service record" and that alone is a good reason to relax and have confidence. Follow the owners manual and don't let "mudsession" control you.

Roll with it and expect that you will have to field some ground balls that take an unexpected hop. And no matter what the wife says just smile and act like you are not surprised.
