I mean I know it's bad, my wife works in Healthcare and works at the Baltimore convention center which is now the field hospital. But I'm also one of the no-fear, wash your hands and wear a mask and you'll be fine types. It's wild times for sure. I'm hoping the event is a go, and that the drive out is easy and uneventful. I had planned a few things to check out, but that's not even on the radar anymore

And to piggy back on my last post, and bring this back to discussing LCDC, I‘ve found myself with lots of spare time on my hands. Depending how things pan out, I may check in at the eleventh hour and see if there’s an open spot for me to make it this year. I’ve wanted to come from the beginning, but summer is a big season in my line of work. If I take a couple of weeks off I’ve got three partners not getting paid, it’s a little different this year. We shall see...

I realize how much work you do to make this a great event, and make sure that everyone is accommodated. I don’t want to be “that guy” who crashes the party, will definitely give you a heads up. Question for those familiar with the area... I believe if you even want to drive through the Rocky Mountain National Park you will need a timed day pass. I'm planning driving Trail Ridge Road on my way so I picked one up. I read if you are camping in the park your camp reservations double as your entry pass. Do any of the trail options we are going on require entrance to the park?

Yes you need a pass to enter the park but can’t remember if your camp reservation counts towards that. We don’t have any trails in the park although we may add some that are close and near Estes Park.

We were there last year. We bought an annual parks pass (which covers all national parks) for $80. The camping reservation did not count.

FYI if you have a 4th grader the NPS has the "every kid in a park" program in which your vehicle gets an annual pass for free. Just need to fill out the form and bring it with you... and of course have your 4th grader with you when you get to the park

A little off topic, but do you think this program will be extended? We have a 4th grader and were going to visit some parks earlier this year but couldn't because of the travel restrictions and hit on our finances in general related to COVID.

It's been around since 2016, so I assume it will continue.

They don't check if your kid is actually a 4th grader - though I suppose if your youngest is driving they might deny you. So long as the program is around, I suppose you could fudge the age. Mine are going into 3rd, 7th, and 9th grade this year so I'll just pay the $80.

Just to clarify some of the comments regarding reservations/fees: starting on June 4, you will need an advance reservation on recreation.gov to access RMNP for day use (i.e., just to get past the gates) if you plan to arrive between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. If you have a campsite reservation, you don't also need to separately reserve an access slot. But you will still need to pay the park entry fee (either the daily rate, annual pass, 4th grade pass, etc.) in addition to your campsite fee.

Just trying to be clear on if I need it or not. Like for lcdc trail days? As I dont know what trails are what days, and one expires end of July another for August, but I'd only be there're 2 days...don't know what time in the 2 hours my group will show....

The reason I brought up the day passes is because Indycole had on his list of potential trails the Old Fall River Road. It occurred to me that a timed day pass might be required to access that road. Not knowing the area, and not wanting to contribute to any confusion, I just thought I would mention it. My hope was that the majority of the trails on the list didn't require accessing the park and the good men in charge could just cross off any that do to reduce logistic complications.

Yeah, there's one route that would require a trip through the park. We'll probably leave that one off the final list if the logistics are too complicated.

Tires and trails... I'm not familiar with the trails Cody has in mind, but here's my dilemma:

I've got two sets of wheels for my LX 570, TRD Rock Warriors and OEM 20"...and both really need new tires for a long trip and rough roads. Running on older Michelin Latitudes on the OEMs now, as the KO2 are so out of balance on the RWs.

With the exception of this trip, 95% of my travel is highways, gravel roads and a few rough roads in Big Bend NP during the year.

I had a good feel for the trails out of Silverton/Ouray last year, since they are so well known. Just no sense of whether this year's will be similar, as scenic, as rough?

The OEM wheels are perfect for street use, so the question is how aggressive a tire would I need for the tentative trail list and are they doable with 20" wheels.
Guessing a Defender LTX isn't going to cut it...if it rains?

I've got a good spare KO2 under the truck on the RW Warrior wheel and it will probably stay. I may end up just doing Coopers or something similar on the RWs, based on recommendations from the various tire threads, but figured I'd throw the question out here.
