So I'm told the LX470 steering rack for a 2003 is different than for the LC.

Is that really true?!

LC p/n is 44250-60100 List: $1,030 Discounted: $712
LX p/n is 44250-60120 List: $1,438 Discounted: $1,072

Obviously I'm motivated to know if there is a real difference, or, if this is just part of the "Lexus Tax".

TIA

The parts catalog shows them like this... and with the same price. :meh:

44250-60100
44250-60120 W(VARIABLE GEAR RATIO STEERING):REFER TO FIG 45-01

Which catalog ? Wondering if one could even put the LC rack on an LX....

Thanks !!

Do the 2005-2007 Land Cruisers have the VGRS system like the LX470 ? They have AHC, so maybe they have VGRS?

If so, then those parts should almost certainly be the same as the LX...

What's the reason for the replacement?

I've ordered a Toyota rack (44250-60100) and will take it to the Lexus dealer and compare it to the one he has on hand (44250-60120)

Interestingly, as hoser states, they both used to use part number 44200-40100 in their system, which included outer tie rod ends, but that part number is now NLA. It still shows up online as a viable part number, but when you ask them to order it, it is NLA. That bit of data has me very curious as to why, suddenly, these part numbers have split. Yes the LX uses the VGRS, but, my understanding currently is, all that resides at the end of the steering shaft, before it connects to the rack.

Will know more in the next couple of days.

In the mean time, the LX is grounded as there was a pretty good bit of fluid on the floor in the garage after it was driven yesterday.

Cross posting.

I see no difference between Toyota and Lexus in spite of the p/n difference.

The racks look identical to each other here are pictures of the two, side by side. Lexus on the left with the black sticker, Toyota with the green sticker.

Then again, Lexus on the top, Toyota on the bottom:

Lexus:

Toyota:

Wish I had time to do this, but work is too busy and travelling too much. Wouldn't be till Thanksgiving week.

Hey guys, any updates on this thread?
I've got an '07 LX470 with a leaking steering rack. I had a Toyota dealership look at it and they say that the LC part number is not interchangeable with the Lexus version and that I need to use the Lexus part. Has anyone been down this road with a late model LC / LX before?

Edit: I just looked up the Lexus part number (44250-60120) that the OP posted and it looks like that is a match for the 2007 LX as well.

interested and following.....

I was told the same thing about my '00 LX. I ended up getting a LC rack and there was virtually no difference between that and my LX rack. From the above pictures I would assume the exact same about the '03-'05 racks. Idk when VGRS comes into play.

After looking, fairly sure they are the same through 05. With the LX moving to VGRS in 06-07, might there be a few significant differences?

I have owned a 2007 LX and am currently driving a 2004 LC. If I recall correctly, one and a half revolutions of the steering wheel would take me from straight to full lock turning right or left going parking lot speeds. The same cannot be said with the 2004 LC. I think I've got to give it 2.5 to 3 revolutions of the steering wheel to achieve same lock turning right or left. I don't know enough about the VGRS system to know what role the steering rack plays in it. Just posting up for what it's worth.

The LC and LX racks may be identical on the outside but that doesnt mean they will have the same ratio (aka C-factor). A simple way to check this with both racks is to measure how much the tierod travels with one full revolution of the pinion. Use a small vice grip on the barrel portion of the pinion input shaft, being careful not to damage the splines, place a scale underneath a paint mark on the tierod, then turn it one full revolution - the measurement needs to be accurate to at least +/-1 millimeter. The VGRS system has a planetary gear reduction box inside the steering column so I would venture to suggest (without concrete data of course) that using the LC rack on the LX is going to produce anything from barely noticeable to downright scary results, depending on how drastic of a C-factor difference there is between the two.

Check your Vin. I believe the 8th number is the key - someone who knows better than me will no doubt chime in.

As a side note, my 06 was at ACC yesterday and needs a new rack. After asking the experts, there is a difference between LC and LX racks. ACC would not install a LC rack on a LX. Gotta love paying double for the 'L"!
