Ok, time to make a start.

This build might take a while but i'm in no rush. I'll post up as it takes shape.

This is my 1993 UK spec 80 series part built trayback which i've decided not to finish. The cab has been sold so i'm left with the rolling chassis, engine, box, electrics etc.......pretty much everything except the body.

Here's the donor Rover, a 1983 series 3 109 ex miitary missing the engine and box.

I stripped the Rover to it's component parts yesterday and found that everything i need is ok for mocking up the build but i'll have to replace or repair a fair bit to be happy with the finish. It only cost me £100 so no big deal really. Worse case i'll make my money back at the scrap yard.

I forgot to mention, we had our 3rd daughter 3 days ago so having a little one about might slow progress but fingers crossed i'll have the body mocked up by christmas. Once thats on, everything else should be pretty simple.

Nice find! and better yet, congrats on the new Growlz-ling!
I look forward to whatever cool buildup you can pull together considering your need to care for your young'ns!

would be interesting the steering part if you are planning to keep it using steering box due to the size frame diferences and LR body ..

I've been looking at that. I'm not sure yet but the plan is to get the bulkhead fitted using modified genuine Landrover outriggers first, reletive to the front axle/steering wheel. I want to use as much of the Toyota as i can so i'm hoping it's just a matter of modifying the Land Rover bulkhead to accept te Toyota steering column.

I have seen some discussion on using toyota parts in a rover on the landcruiser owners club europe site--mostly discussion of possibilities no builds yet though

I am a Yank but live in the UK and I shipped my 71
FJ40 over ---right now I am in the process of installing a h55 and 1hdt in it---well still gathering parts but almost there

yup plenty of old rovers trundling about doing daily duties with a 1hdt under the hood there will probably be some surprises when they automatically pull over to start passing you! That happens in my FJ too:lol:

in aircraft in between structures and dissimilar metals we use this or similar sealant-- for the price it is a good sealer and corrosion preventative. if the parts are close fitting or you join them you can assemble it wet---works nicely, long lasting, and reduces rattles and so on too.

Thanks for that. The sealant looks good. I'll keep it in mind.

Normally the worse points for corrosion are the door frames and the body to chassis mounting points. I can't do much about the doors as the aluminium skin is bonded to the steel frame, but i can put plastic spacers in to isolate the body from the chassis.

I ordered a set of series 3 outriggers last week. I just need to strip the cab off the Land Cruiser so i can start offering up the bulkhead. The quicker i get the cab off the quicker i can get it away to the new owner and make some room.

Once the outriggers are on i can decide where i want to put the rear crossmember. The it's just a matter or shortening the tub to fit. (I hope!)

A 45LV with a 80 drive train would be pretty cool.
:D

now where have I heard that combo before, Gumby?:D
how is the FZJ45LV going?

I've done the "Rovota" swap in my LR Discovery: keeping the diff housings, and going with 8" Toy 3rds along with 30 splines and Longs...been holding up well to the 42s...

My next version of the project will have a land rover frame, defender 1/2 cab, TLC40 lexan hood & light bezel, rover drivetrain (V8, ZF, dual cases) and rockwell axles...

Nothing like putting together an evil bastard!

Goodluck - great project...

We had a good dump of snow since my last post which hung about for a while and slowed progress to a complete stop. The snow's gone now but it's freeking freezing and i don't have a workshop.

But, i've been sourcing more parts.

I've now managed to get hold of a defender 90 front end and 110 tub and cab so it looks like the only parts i'll be using from the series 3 is the bulkhead and seat box. If i can get dold of a defender bulkhead and seat box i'll just keep the series to renovate later.

Apart from that, wee Lily is almost 10 weeks old and doing well, time flys. The eldest Holly has decided that she wants to renovate my old '78 suzuki for a school project and my mam and da have decided that they want to rent an old wreck of a cottage i own during summer, so i've got my work cut out at the moment. But i'm sure i'll get a few hours on this soon.

Excellent, thanks for that. I've never seen anything like it. I thought mine was going to be the first but i'm more relaxed now i can see that it can be done.

You can see how long the LC axles are compared to the LR axles by the size of the wheel arch eyebrows.

I see it's on a defender chassis. Mine will keep the LC80 chassis.

Cheers.

From my point of view, i would keep as much as possible Rover, parts are cheap and easy to get in your country.

Power train should be Toyota all the way.

You may consider to have a look at bolt on Portals so you could even think about using rover axles by reducing the stress on the differentials with the portals.
Or wait until they finished the setup for Toyota axles.:meh:

Thanks Peter.

Toyota parts are reasonable over here these days. I'll just use what i have and fabricate what i need.

The portals look good but not for this build. What kind of money do the cost for a land rover set?
