I hestiate to post the question, even here. But I think this is a safer palce to post it. I know I'd get killed if a posted it in the 80 forum. Maybe in excummunicated just for thinking it. But here is goes.

Last year I fullfilled a dream and bought an 92 LC. I had no idea I was getting the under powered 3FE. I am new to the 4x scene and lean more towards the expedition side rather then trail. I love my truck but it gets terrible milage and is a dog up highway grades.

I am looking to build what I would call and "Adventure Rig" I am also looking to ditch my DD comuter car and just have one veh. Not even a chance of doing that with the 3FE.

I used to own a 95 Montero and honestly miss it comfort on highway handliling. Here are the pros of the Montero. I plan to use the truck for long trips to carrier my mt bikes all over the southwest. I also want to do some expidition type stuff and moderate trail running. Rock Crawling RUBICON or HELLS GATE are not in my plans.

The Montero comes with a DOHC, a stock rear locker, ABS, air bags, way more comfy seats, almost 10 more MPG, a stock thermometer, compas, and angle thingy.

Am I crazy? Oh and I can get one for about 1500, 2000 grand less then I can sell the 80 for. Plus a few grand from my 02 Focus I will be selling. All of which I plan to but right back in the Montero in PM and mods. Like 33, lift lights and a ARB bumper.

I just will no longer be a LC owner. Am I crazy?

sell me.......or just plane sell your 80 you have NO IDEA what you have and clearly dont deserve it.

Search 80's for 3fe, is there a 1fz.com?

Are you running 33's with factory gears? then you are basing your assumptions on lack of knowledge...

good thing you didnt post in the 80 section, but we check in here also. If you really want to do that then go ahead, from your previous posts it sounded like you were starting to find out what makes an 80 such a great vehicle.

Get rid of the 92FJ80 no power I had a 94 mistu-pice O Junk new It Sucked got rid of It fast ! I traded for a 94 FZJ80 drove It for 250,000 miles! Git a 93 to 97 FZJ80 you be glad you did.

I have a 95 mitsu montero with 155k miles on it. I have owned it for 11 years. It is a very good car, second in build quality only to a LandCruiser imho. It gets about 19 in my small high altitude town, and about 24 on the road.

It has never let me down, and I have put quite a few dirt road miles on it. It is not nearly the wheeler that my 80 is though. But it is a bit more narrow and squeeezes through the brush easier. I have seen a couple that were lifted and locked go through the Deer Valley trail near Lake Tahoe with no problems.

My montero has never been garaged, lived most of it's life here at Lake Tahoe and is my daily driver that I would drive cross-country without hesitation.

Thank you all for the "Constructive Critisim" I knew I was going to get killed. But I knew you guys would get it to me straight! I have considered going to 4.88 but wanst sure what it would do to my MPG and RPMs at highway speeds.

I know my mitsu, 4X4 like a Box a roller skate under It wheel spin was Its name.
I took Montero deer hunting once the load slammed the frame to the axle and stayed there, felt like It was going to roll over at any time .

I did not say the Mitsubishi wasn,t a highway machine but If yoou want something strong-built for all conditions can't beet the FzJ80

The FZJ80 far more robust machine for off road if you want a adventure/ Exhibition Rig ? better traction and stability with a big 1,000 lb.Junk or more load on It just point & Go !

Whats that?

get your OD ratio .70 I think

step 2: mph, x diff x trans x TC / tire dia x 336 = rpm @ rpm

I use 70 mph, multiply that by the final drive (4:11) x .70 (I think) x (unless your in low dont x)

what ever that is divide it by the tire dia, and x by 336

that WILL be your RPM's at the speed you put in the equation

This is why #'s or ratio's must be exact. And any 1:1 (drive) you dont have to use it does not effect so (again only 1:1) you dont need it in the equation

:flipoff2:

*NOW* do two equations one for what you got now and one for the way it came, felt, and what it was designed for from the factory. ;)

look at the difference, where it was from the factory was where your motor puts out its peak or most optimum power(part of the formula, if you are scratch building a rig get the motors torque curve and then get the gears to put it there ;)).
You don't have it there anymore and you have what you have now because you changed it. Gears will get it back and despite your misconceptions or what you've heard "gears" will replace the lug and get it back up on the balls of its feet, lug, heel you cant run on your heel, ball, close or where it needs to be. And toes, where it needs to be and then some, over gear....5:29's and 33's :D which is what I'm gonna do, I need more power down low Vs. highway cruising.

I agree with the guys talking about gearing, there's nothing wrong with the 3Fe for power.

the simple answer is that yes, you can weigh the pros and cons of various features, but for an "adventure rig" you must realize that the landcruiser will probably be far easier to find parts, and is generally tougher all round.

Before you spend the time/money to regear, you owe it to yourself to tighten up the "kickdown cable". I sort of stumbled onto a link to the instructions for it in the FAQ - 80-series Throttle Adjustment - Land Cruiser Tech from IH8MUD.com - and decided to give it a try. I put the bead about 2mm out from the "boot" and there's a BIG DIFFERENCE in the perceived power output from my 3FE! Doesn't feel underpowered at all to me now, but then again I drove a 4Runner with a 22RE for 10 years too.

Whatever you do, DON'T sell your truck and buy an FZJ80 ! ! ! Sure the FZJ will have more giddyup, but I think there's a reason the 3FE is basically the same engine that was used for 20+ years and the 4.5L was phased out after just 5.

"3F-E Powa!"

Asshooter, My issue isnt with the 3FE. I wouldnt trade the small amount of power the FJZ80 gives for it's problems with HG. Though the ABS and airbags would be nice. With the exhuast mods the PO installed I can cruise at 80 mph on falts easy. The climbs are another matter. MY biggest problem is MPG. I'm lucky to get 13 mpg. And I dont think much if anything will change that. The Monty will put my very close if not over teh 20 MPG range.

And Dave. I posted this issue in mutliple fourms on Exped Portal. I figured that group would be more objective. I brought it hear to get the Toyaota Loyalists opinions. I basically was looking for cons here. I got plenty of pros on Expo Portal

Can you sleep in the mitsubishi? In a landcruiser you can just fold down the back seats and you have a big bed, no need for tent or roof tent or anything like that...
I've never tried one, but the montero looks too short
