Now that the 80 series are coming of age and many of our engines are begining to show signs of the 2-300000 miles on them and new replacements are somewhat cost prohibitive, I was wondering how many 80 series have different engines installed into them.

After reading alot of different threads and different conversions I wanted to put as many of them into one thread as possible for peoples research.

What worked for you? What would you do differently? Costs? Time? Modifications required? Fab work involved?

You can link your/someone elses build from here if you want to show more in depth detail of each conversion.

Here is a few links that I have come up with so far with input from many of you-

Cummins 6BT swap, courtesy of Project FJ80.

Chevrolet 6.5 liter Brunswick Diesels in western Australia

Chevrolet small block to A440 350 TBI courtesy of Whiteshark

Chevrolet LT1 Small block courtesy of Kirk

Chevrolet small block Jeff Jones with Marks adapters

Toyota 4.7 V8 V8 4.7 Courtesy of...... me ;)

Below are some places to buy parts and they also have some tech related info.

Marks4wd-Chevrolet 6.5 liter and small block conversions Located in Australia.

Brunswickdiesels 6.5 liter Chevrolet conversions Located in Australia

If anyone else knows of any conversions that have been done post up please.

Do you have any links on the 6.5l conversion? I have been looking, but have not found any good ones.

I wouldn't want a 6.5 Diesel in anything. They are the worse diesels in history because of the injection pump. I have rarely seen one hit 200k w/o major problems. I remember when they started out as a 6.2 that half of them quit running because the starter fell out w/ the block ear still bolted! You can't do upgrades power wise on them like the others, Powerstroke,Cummins, and Duramax.

I did an LT1 conversion back in 1994 in a 91 FJ80. I used a 700R4 transmission through a 1989 FJ62 Spitcase. It still being driven today 12 years later.

Others that I can remember:

Jeff Jones (Whale here on 'Mud). Truck is now owned by KrisFJ40 I think.
Bill Miranda
Seth Haines

You'll need to do some searching on the last 2; Jeff's rig is well documented and the link is posted above.

I *love* the LT1 engines; especially in any Land Cruiser.

I would like to do a 5.3/6.0 GM LSx 4L80E setup one day in my FZJ80. Gobs of power and probably even slightly better fuel economy.

Minor mods on a 5.3/6.0 engine can net 300ft/lbs tq+ at 2,000rpm and they will easily rev to 6500rpm in stock form.

The LSx engine is incredibly easy to work on and are very very reliable plus are pretty lightweight (all aluminum engine is about 475lbs.... iron block add 100lbs to the total). Parts are not over priced, easily sourced from junkyards, and they also accept turbo setups with very few mods required as long as you aren't looking for more than 550rwhp+.

A 12 second 1/4 mile capable FZJ80 that can 4x4 as well would be pretty incredible.
