hey guys my name is karl,

i have an l52 gearbox behind a GM 5.0l V8 in an isuzu trooper.

had i realised the L52 was the weakest 5speed fitted to a hilux i would have gone another route...but i didnt...and i broke it

i have nothing but 4th gear (direct drive) so im guessing iv buggered the lower shaft.

my problem is that due to the size of the motor/gearbox is that i cant remove the gearbox without lifting the motor and move it forward, i wanted to know if its possible to remove the transfer case beforehand?

id love to upgrade to a w56 or R151F...but due to the small trooper tunnel, size is a big issue :P

so theres my issue, do i put another l52 behind it or do i cut out the tunnel and make another one around it with a stronger gearbox?

thanks heaps guys
Karl

Step one would be to sell the GM motor to the nearest crabbing boat in need of an anchor...

The t-case can be dropped easily. It's bolted to an aluminum adapter between the cast-iron section of the tranny and the t-case itself, and all the shifters go into this adapter section.

You have to pull the snap-ring holding the t-case shifter in place, and remove it, because it's a forward-shifting setup, then just undo the bolts between the adapter and the t-case.

Drain it first! (in case you didn't know this)

My bad. I forgot to mention this.

As far as your transmission quandry, it's up to you, but I would rather rework some sheetmetal to accommodate a stronger Aisin transmission than run a GM trans.
R150/151 are stronger, AX15 is another option.

The R-series would be the stronger of the bunch. The Toyota transfer case is held on by six bolts.

Theres nothing wrong with the motor haha. It spat out 220hp on the dyno which is more than plenty for the sub 2ton trooper :p i have difficulty with traction in 3rd gear. How far does the t-case need to move back to clear the shafts?would it be less than the input shaft clearing the clutch? troopers have a brace right at the back of the output shaft which stops me from moving the box back far enough to clear the clutch :(

My recommendation is to have the L52 rebuilt.
They're good transmissions, but need some work. A machine shop can clearance the housing to accept a larger input bearing, and the stock gears are straight-cut, and robust.
