How do you retorque the studs anyway. I tried that but it's very difficult to get to the ones which are closer to the dust shield.

In the midst of front axle rebuild and found out the previous owner put in 2 bolts instead of replacing the knuckle studs. To make it worse, they were self-tapping bolts and totally stripped the threads in the knuckle.

I was thinking of using a Heli-Coil thread repair kit to rethread the holes. Is this a good idea? Will it have the same structural integrity as the original threaded holes (i'm guessing not)? If anyone has experience doing this, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

If done properly, a helicoil will be stronger than the original threaded holes. I would also do a helicoil before I did time serts or any of that other garbage.

So who has knuckle studs in stock?

I ordered 90126-12005 from toyota parts deal (did it twice actually) and got the knuckle stud NUTS instead, both times....they are part # 90179-12021

I now see on the toyota parts deal website that they are saying the STUD p/n has been replaced by the NUT p/n......so that explains why I keep getting the nuts....but how can a stud p/n turn into a nut p/n? They do not serve the same design and function.

I just need the studs for one knuckle....I have plenty of nuts now!

Just an FYI and mentioned before on the forum.

If you mark the studs and nuts with a paint pen after setup and torqued, you can give them a quick visual at anytime to see if they have moved.

I have personally never had studs come loose or fall out (or bust) on any Cruiser but I do mark mine and check them before, during and after wheeling.

Cheers

Well, I just learned this lesson the hard way too up in northern michigan on a solo camping trip. I was able to limp out but I will definitely be marking them and taking a quick peek before I hop in from now on!

Very grateful for this thread! I just ran to my wife "SEE! SEE! I told you I wasn't doing anything crazy up there!"
