Have not had much time to post on things of my own. Been busy with the boys (@SipLife and @Cowboy45) projects. Thought I would get it started. Rig is a 97 triple locked 80. 177k miles. Bone stock except for front bumper. Everything works. No rust. Clear blue title.

Bought it in San Antonio. Owner had a ton of receipts. Only issue was oil leaks from the common areas (front main seal, power steering pump cover, dizzy oring). Drove it to DFW topping it off every 100 miles🥴. It got me home. Nice rust proofing for sure. It’s a good start.

We are a cruiser family. Hope to document the journey we are on. As with most of these great beasts it is a marathon, not a sprint.

The name is appropriate. Rough around the edges. Smells like it at times.

The build plan will evolve with time.

First will be a good baselining.

Saw this one for sale, was very tempted to snatch it up, but glad you grabbed it! Looking forward to seeing you plans.

On a side note, I know you almost grabbed the other 40th in SA as well and because of your interaction between the seller and subsequent post on mud, it compelled me to stop hazing him and actually reach out and buy it from him. So thanks!

His style was a little off putting to most on Mud, but he was a stand up guy when I spoke to him. Glad you got it. Timing just did not work out at the time. It was a good deal. You lucked out.

Ordered wits end front timing cover seal kit ( dizzy oring, front main seal, oil pump gasket, new hex screws, etc.). Also managed to snag a used HD 2.5” OME lift kit (40k miles). Will be adding bilsteins down the road if shocks are not great. Waiting for barn time.

Took a bigger bite at it today. Rubbing compound and wool pad followed by Griots.:princess: Also took to it. Its a good first cut. Going to try Graphene polish tomorrow.

Getting better. Its an art. Tried the maguires cutting compound and finishing polish. Tried various pads (wool, foam). Kept getting bake in of compound and polish. Looked splotchy. Also tried high end graphene infused stuff, no joy. Eventually went back to simple rubbing compound by hand and elbow grease to prevent “bake in” of compound. Then waxed by hand as well. No splotches. Deeper richness.

Good for now. Hood and roof will need to be painted. Rest will work for my needs.

Its been a minute. Trying to work small things in between other projects as I wait for parts. Brutus has had a nasty aftermarket alarm that has been causing havoc. Keeps going off and jacking with the main ign relay and fuel pump relay. Tried to start. No CEL. Found IGN fuse popped while on battery chargw. Restored CEL. Tried to start, crank but no start. Ripped out the alarm system. Still no start. Have spark, it started with starter fluid. Fuel pump relay and main ign relay checked out. So yanked fuel pump. Alarm triggering relays might have burnt it out. It’s toast. Learning as I go about PO. Looks like they replaced fuel pump with after market “Kenzo” pump. New Denso OEM pump and filter en route from Partsouq.

Needed new battery lugs. Brake bleeders were shot. Also got a power bleeder with toyota Master reservoir adapter. Trying to get brakes sorted, then oil leaks (dizzy and oil pump)

Is this unit running yet?

Back at it. Still getting a crank no start.

Popped the fuel return line from fuel rail pressure regulator and cranked. No fuel even with new Denso pump. Re opened the fuel pump access port and pulled the pump. Bench tested fine and have 12v at the fuel pump harness upstream of pump.

Turns out PO has spliced a fuel pump connector for a Walbro pump (large spade connectors). It’s not making contact with smaller Denso pump pins. Me connector pig tail en route.

While pump was out, moved on to confirm spark. Ignition. Ignition coil appears delivers spark to distributor but distributor does not deliver spark through spark plug wires!
Scratching my head. PO had installed Bosch wires on distributor. Not a fan. Ordered OEM wire set.

In the mean time confirmed the following:

1) Have check engine light when key is on and cranking
2) All fusible links are working
3) Ignition coil lead heading to distributor seems to have voltage (timing light clamp, light flicker test)
4) No spark through distributor to spark plugs

Yanked the security system out of the truck. Still no joy.

Qs for @jonheld et al.

1) Since fuel pump is disconnected while I confirm spark, does the fuel pump system prevent distributor from sending spark to plugs of fuel pressure is low?

2) Does the OEM security system control/ disable any of the distributor 4 wire pigtail connector wires function? Does the 4 wire pigtail control spark coming from ignition coil heading to spark plugs?

3) Does the cam position sensor signal to ECU determine if spark from ignition coil is sent to plugs? In other words, does a faulty cam position sensor cause prevent spark at the plugs?

4)Do US 1997 80 series have immobilizers? Truck has run before. Not sure why I have current issue.

Spark is developed from the pickup coils in the distributor which feed the ECU. The ECU retimes the pulses according to sensor inputs and feeds those pulses to the igniter which feeds the primary of the ignition coil.
You stated, "3) igniter lead heading to distributor has spark." The igniter doesn't touch the distributor.

Have you tested the ignition system according to the FSM?

@jonheld, I messed up terminology. Meant to say lead from ignition coil to distributor cap has “spark”. I connected the spark plug clamp on my timing light to the lead from the coil to the distributor and cranked and the timing light flickers. I have not tested per FSM and will look into it. Is the tach on the dash supposed to bounce as you crank?

Watching an inductive timing light flicker does not confirm spark.
You should see a good strong arc to ground feeding the distributor from the coil.

@jonheld, does the ECU need a permissive from the fuel system to initiate spark system or are they totally independent? In other words, since my fuel pump is disconnected, does it somehow prevent the spark generation at the distributor? If so, I need to get the fuel side sorted before chasing down spark.
