We made it back to the house at 7pm yesterday! We hit the flats of Texas between 65 and 72 mph on a neutered carb with a primary jet! We offset in fuel burn what plastic bags sustainability initiatives in NM and CO hoped to realize. Trees will be healthy, tons of CO2 released!

@SipLife and I had the “frustration” itch of the carb performance fix so we tore into the carb. We un-neutered the secondary side, added a washer to the power valve in the bowl, and found a 137 primary and 171 secondary jet in some spare “parts” carbs I had. We switched out the the 141 primary and 220 secondary we used on the trip. We installed it and tried to tune it. Still getting black smoke at idle and when you romp on the skinny pedal. Looks like the accelerator circuit is fueling when primary is active. Going to tear into this next.

We tore into the carb once more and went looked at the accelerator pump circuit and wanted to confirm the power piston was cycling under vacuum. We were missing part 38. In the blow up diagram. Luckily I had three parts carbs I had bought in case I needed to scavenge parts. One of them had the part. We put it in. Took out the SST to measure and set the initial throttle body angles and fast idle choke angle. Installed it back on Kermit and followed through with a lean drop the best we could without a tach. Adjusted the timing to the DUI sweet spot. What a difference! No more rich idle or black smoke at WOT. Power like no other. We took it on a test drive (to buy a timing gun with a tach). Got it on the highway. We hit 80 mph without much effort! Took some hills at the same speed and just kept trucking. The combination of smaller jets (136 primary and 171 secondary), timing and addressing the accelerator pump circuit dialed this in so well. Engine is very smooth. Pulls 25 in Hg manifold vacuum!

Will repeat the lean drop with new timing gun to get it spot on per FSM.

BTW, was going to pay for my timing gun but @SipLife swooped in and paid for it as my bday gift!🎁.

That’s some sleuthing there bud.

Got some 60 rims from @Dallas Todd and had them sand blasted and powder coated RAL 9010. Grey rims will go back on Pterodactyl, my son’s 40.

The 60 shoes are ssmmoooothhh…🏆

I get it that things are big in Tejas but, that garage!!! In my spatially challenged world, that is living large. Looks like you took over a warehouse, stadium or small nation. Honor and props your way this AM. 👍🏻

We are blessed to have found Small Nirvana in Big D. Unlike many, COVID did us right! I used to have a place in East Texas about an hour from Big D. Boys and I drove each weekend to wrench since it had a shop. When we found this place, we sold that place and moved all the toys and tools to this place. We traded an hour drive in favor of 20 steps. I wanted a class room for my boys in the back yard. They are better men today because of it. The best thing I ever did for them. If you need a rabbit hole to while away a coffee or two with speed walk thumbs, have a gander.
