JW Offroad Spare Tire Mount

We appreciate your purchase ArBrnSnpr.....@ADVFamilyHauler We initially went on a whim and created the mount without any interior or exterior brace to the frame, we ran it as is for a little over 500 miles on and off road. We truly were shocked on how durable the factory hinges and rear skin of that hatch are. I know theres a lot of talk on how weak the hinges are on the gx's but truthfully they are super durable. I'm not sure if your anyone on here are on instagram but we posted a few weight test videos on there to showcase the strength of not only our mount but the rear hatch. I also have photos on how we have a 1/8" steel backing plate on the interior top and bottom mounts for the load......I included a few photos below, We're a small fabrication shop out here in Chino CA. We truly love that we stumbled upon such an awesome rig like the GX, and just like everyone else "we want hook ours up". We have kids, and we need our 3rd row, so throwing a 35" spare in the trunk is out of the picture. Thanks for the info. Not to be a jerk but standing on the carrier and driving for 500 miles isn’t a real test of durability especially with prado 120’s having issues with their doors sagging and seam welds cracking when they have bigger spares on the back.

@ADVFamilyHauler I agree with you. At least someone is trying to get another option out there. If you check out their Instagram account they have obviously been looking at the rear door structure a lot. I think that time will tell on this.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s great to have another company making parts for the GX. Just don’t want people installing these and then have issues with their rear doors. Time has told us the door will fail.

Quick google search and I got this from a website.
“The rear door skin on my 2005 Toyota Prado has cracked down the hinge side, separating where the metal folded into the door. Apparently this is a common problem on the 120 series model, given the weight of the door and spare tyre mounted on it. Toyota offered to cover 50 percent of the repair cost, which was good given the car was just out of warranty. The replacement door had a 12-month warranty, but three months after the warranty expired it cracked in the same place. When I approached Toyota again they said that the door was not under warranty, hence I must pay full price. Consumer affairs tried on my behalf, but got the same reply. Would it not be reasonable to expect merchantable warranty given the long model run and the R&D that goes into the tough Landcruiser? Not sure where to from here.”

Band aid fix and keep in mind most had the stock size spare. Toyota’s ultimate fix was to move the spare underneath for the newer models. That tells you something.

So this needs a simple load bearing support that connects at the frame. Similar to other options. That shouldn’t add too much to the cost. Certainly not another $500!

As mentioned above, the washers are just a "band-aid" fix to realign the door so it closes properly without clunking against the lock catch. The real issue is the door seam separating or cracking due to the stress of the extra weight on the door. The hinges themselves are fine.
Awesome to see another option for this but the support issue needs to be addressed as per the Becky from ACC (but hopefully for less $$). I debated buying the Becky but converted to CDN $$ plus shipping thats a pretty hard pill to swallow! Maybe I'll buy the JW then fab my own lower support?? Still need to see how the JW is braced at the back/inside.

I just looked at the Becky again and it is a much better design. I would buy the Becky in a heart beat if it was $500. At their price point of $950 I will just spend extra and get a rear bumper with swing out. With the people in this thread and everybody else interested in the Becky they would sell so many more if they adjusted their price point.

Just to play devils advocate, the door seam split problem and subsequent door sag is a real possibility on the GX470. I have seen it with my own eyes with a stock vehicle with no spare tire mounted on the door. I don't know how it came to be though, it looked just the like above picture.

If the inner and outer skin is sandwiched and tied together shouldn’t this prevent the door seem issue? Is the Prado rear tire carrier mounted the same way?

Correct. The door already acts like a giant lever at the hinges, but the problem isn't the hinges themselves its the seam next to the hinges. Adding weight to the door (spare tire) just puts more force on the lever which causes the seam to split, no amount of bracing behind the tire carrier will fix this. Having downward load support directly beneath the tire is a must!

So now think about adding additional gear to this mount like a high lift or a rotopax which is what some of its "erector set" type design is for. Combined with a 35 inch tire and wheel. Without some sort of support on the bottom it, it will fail in time just like the prado doors.

For the extra coin on the Becky I will pay to save myself the possible grief and expense of an entirely new door.
