Hi Dom,

Your electrical upgrade is looking good. If you run into problems let me know. I have the Toyota Shop Manual and there are additional wiring diagrams and wire color code indexes referencing the use of that colored wire. There are also some more schematics of the sub-wiring harnesses.

Your thread is very detailed and the pictures are great.

Cheers,

Jim

I'm curious, after you painted the white letters how did you paint the black without covering any of the white?

24-

No black paint for the knobs. It seems the old knobs are pretty damn good plastic so...

First I use simple green and either soak them for 30-45 minutes (I haven't tried longer) or just spray SG on a good clean towel and start rubbing away. For the faces I have been placing the towel on the workbench and just pressing down really hard and rubbing the face really fast, over and over and over. It takes some time but with patience these have cleaned up nicely. You'd be amazed how much brown comes off on the towel. I move from spot to spot on the towel adding new SG each time. I spend less time on the edges and back but you can get them really nice too.

After I let it dry I use the pen and put a lot of paint in the letters and don't worry too much about slop over around the letters. Remember that whatever extra you put in you have to get off though.

The paint removal I have done a few ways. First I would let it dry completely and then do the same Simple Green trick with a towel over and over and over and the residual would come off. You have to be patient as it takes some effort. The way I just did the throttle cable (a little harder to work with with the cable attached) is painted it up and let it dry for just a short time, then gave a quick wipe of the excess. Most of it came off except for a small smear along the front but it leaves the letters nice. If it's not dry enough when you try this some of the paint in the letters will wipe away and you'll need to repeat the painting and let it dry longer. After that I let it dry completely and then follow the last step of SG and pressing and rubbing away. Believe me, there are times when I don't think the extra paint is coming off but it will.

I have a spare knob I'll do today and make a new thread.

Dude, you just said you have "a spare knob" that's awesome. BTW white crayon works pretty good also. It gets into the cracks then wipes off the main surface. The paint looks pretty damn good though!

Actually....the early cruisers that had a PTO Winch didn't have a hole in the tranny cover. It was a handle down by the firewall.

Hmm? never seen this. Pics?

Dom, it is an OEM toyota part. Cutting the tranny tunnel for it is not a big deal for a cool OEM winch.

Maybe our next weekend project should be molding a fiberglass version of the tranny tunnels. My Fj45LV needs a fiberglass one, since I am not going to cut a virgin one for a 4 speed AND PTO winch.

I can bring the supplies.... wont be done in a weekend, but most of the work could be knocked out in a few hours....

Dom, I actually have a complete factory pto, down to the original lever, knob and correct tunnel plate, that I have been saving for a future 100% bone stock 45. It would be hard to let go of ,but you never know! I will let you sleep on that buddy!!!

I also decided to change the lenses on my turn signals. The old ones were white from the sun and cracking

Another thing of interest. I was over at my buddy Rob's house again (a cruiser museum it seems) and on these old Cruisers. . . .some actually came with WHITE/CLEARISH Turn signals lenses.

I remember someone saying on here that they were all amber and ours were just faded. Rob has a picture of a 64 pinned onto his cork board mass of pictures. It is an old photo and I am going to try to get it scanned so I can upload it, but in that picture, the turn signals are white.

I took both of mine off, inspected, reviewed, etc...and they were always white. In fact, it was the bulbs inside that were of amber color.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I don't think yours were faded amber. I believe they were white - as mine are and that it would be super cool to acquire a white replacement lens.

Cheers - D

Now there's something to think about! :bounce:

Would love to see a pic of that too. Post up when you get a chance.

Very cool, thanks for the tip. They look great.

x2

I printed out your method and put it in my shop binder for future reference.

So someone responded to my want ad (Thanks Roy!) for a big window and it arrived a few days ago. Came out of a 65 and was running prior to being pulled and stored in the early 80's...

He also threw in an old oil cap as mine had one catch and sat caddywompus...

IMG_3340.jpg

I got a carb kit for it today and will tackle this in the next few weeks...

IMG_3345.jpg

I also added a new Toyota coil/points/condenser since the P.O. had an aftermarket on there that was burning up points. I can't imagine why!!??? (This was on the back side mounted towards the block)...

IMG_3344.jpg

So no external resistor was killing these points. I was actually pretty surprised how well it ran considering the points were all smoked within a few miles.

Here's the new Toyota setup (internal resistor):

Did I mention I was JUST going to put tires on it, clean up the steering and brakes and putt it around town for a few years?

Ha Ha Ha! The sickness....

God I know how you feel. I was just going to swap out the transfer case...

Looking good Dom! It is kind of like a puzzel with new suprise around the every corner.:D Looks like your doing a great job.

Cheers,

Jim

Looking Great Dom:

I am going to follow your thread for my 65. Mine thru craps on the way to S.M. to get it weighed (DMV) requirement. Called a tow and brought it home. I thought at fist it was on fire, but all the bluish gray smoke was coming from the tailpipe? LA City task force showed up a little later on for a smoke in the area call. Keep up the great work.

Mike-

I feel fortunate to have a pretty smoke free ride. :) Did you figure out why it's smoking so bad?

I need to stop by and check out your rides one day after work.

Now fix that leaky valve cover gasket.

Tell me about it. Current leaks that have wreaked havoc on my driveway no matter how hard I try to keep something underneath it...

Valve cover- I need to review the valve adjustment procedure in the FSM, then I'm on it!

Oil pan gasket
Rear main seal
Front tranny input shaft seal (or maybe the retainer gasket)
Rear transfer output shaft seal

:meh:

Dom:

I brought it home and parked it. Sitting on the firefighters oral board and busy working out 48/96 issues. Looks like we are switching over next month. Thanks to your Enigine Co. for showing up to the CCPD funeral. Officer had 3 kids under 10, sad sad day. Next week might work, I'll PM you.

Mike
