Not sure you're going to dig the grapplers in snow or ice.

Not sure you're going to dig the grapplers in snow or ice.

Trail or Terra? Terras are the A/Ts, I haven't seen anything that negative, usually so-so at worst. I'd rather run duratracs or skinnier cooper AT3's (don't have the right wheel size), but for the price I don't think I'll be too disappointed when 99% of my snow use will be hitting the slopes where the roads are frequently plowed.

After reading horrible reviews on the Terra grapplers and talking with cummins guys who swore they'd never buy them again I went GG AT2 in 315/75/16 and all the good things said about them stand true, I love them.

Got 5 with road hazard, mounted and balanced for life at wally world for about $1150, used a sears sale and made wally price match, plus got the 100 rebate from GG back in July.

The grapplers are known for: Horrible mud cleanout, squirrely in rain, dicey in snow and death on ice plus they wear quick. A guy over at pirate said they were shot at 25K and when the tread pattern wore in they tracked with a mind of their own.

People that have run them say siping is a must if you're driving on wet asphalt/snow/ice.

Not trying to discourage you, hell if I could have saved a couple hundies from my GG's I would have gone TG and did some self siping, since I didn't have the cash for BFG KO2's the GG was about my only option for a near 35" tire from a company that's been around a long long time.

The Terra Grapplers are siped. The Trail Grapplers are not. Terra Grappler on Tire Buyer: Nitto Terra Grappler - Free Delivery Available | TireBuyer.com

I mix them up all the time -- not saying those comments aren't towards the terra based on their experience, but they seem inconsistent for the tire. For example, I would expect horrible mud cleanout for the terras (it's an AT). Whereas, for the trails I would expect mediocre wet and poor snow/ice performance on road.

I have heard that the nittos wear relatively quick overall, but I'm expecting a heavy discount from a friend. If all the reviews for the terras were as bad as the ones you describe, I would absolutely pay for something better, but I just haven't seen those comments for this tire (whereas, for other nittos, I absolutely have).

One caveat here being: lots of people expect a tire like the Trail grapplers to work well in the winter and they just aren't made for that. Because they're cheaper than other options, there may be a higher number of people trying to run some 'badass' MT in the winter for looks, cost, just don't know... or whatever. Jeep people fall into that category all the time. The alternative situation is you have a bunch of guys from California saying "get the Goodyear MT/R-Ks, they're REALLY good and worth the extra price" to some guy that plans to DD his Jeep in New Hampshire.

I have no idea if any of that applies since I haven't read the posts themselves, but from the tread design of the terras I can't imagine them being THAT bad.

Like I said not trying to discourage you, I would have tried them if they were cheaper than the price I paid for the GG's

I've had and loved all the other Nitto's I've owned but they've all been on cars.

Keep us posted on how you like them and how they wear.

Just one data point but I have about 45k on a set of terra grapplers on my stock fj cruiser. They still have half tread and drive great. If I drive like a highschooler I can get them to slide all over in the rain and snow, but I just don't drive like a highschooler... No real experience off road.

Oh hey, everything came on my birthday, cool.

I appreciate the input! I still haven't found out exactly what I can get them for, I did say I'd put a sticker on the truck though if the price was right.

There no good reason to buy any tire that is not Made in the USA. We make plenty of great choices. If you don't wheel hard in the rocks then duratracs are an awesome all around tire. You will not be disappointed.

Back brakes - Done
Slee Headlight Harness - Done
HIR2 9012s (low beams) - Done; Note 1: here I thought the 9012s would work for the high beams too, but the hole is a different size. At least I got the low beams right, couldn't really care less about the highs so much. Note 2: I can see at night, yay.
Rigid D2 driving lights - Done

Front brakes... decided this was too annoying to jump into this weekend as I'm traveling M-F, so I'll do them in two weeks after I source the 54mm socket from Amazon.

Picked up a knuckle rebuilt kit and wheel bearing kit from Cruiser Yard; everything going on this weekend.

Picture to show duplicate parts you get going with both kits vs a couple stand alone parts. I.e., you could buy the pictured bearings standalone and have everything. The dup seals and gaskets are cheap, but so are some of you (and I have no idea if it would even be less expensive) -- it's not bad to have extras.

Ah, finally, I got the title so I can get my insurance check and tackle my out of control AMEX balance. Personalized Ducks Unlimited plates were approved, still waiting on those though. Gotta love the DMV.

@n00g7, what re you gonna do with that old ARB? I'm in Austin and might be interested....

I'm keeping it. It bent back into decent shape, just need to "adjust" a few places to get the remaining bolts to the frame in.

Also, welcome.

And thanks!

Kurt at Cruiseroutfitters sells the entire front end birf kit plus bearings, Koyo or OEM for like $125 shipped when I did mine

Yeah, I was going to pull the trigger on those but Cruiseryard is just down the street and he had them so I just picked up local.

First, really nice STI there- Looks like you have almost as much in that Infinity as you do in the truck!
I have run terra grapplers in a 33", and now the newer G2 in a 34" size on my 100 series. Very good AT tire if you have to drive hours and hours to the trailhead. Balances well and is very round, but not a very deep, aggressive tread and is not be good in mud, but the 10 ply carcass is exceptionally durable. I have the Toyo OC AT 2 in a 34" size on my 80 series. Now that is a much better tire if you are driving a long ways and then going a long ways off road! The GY Duratrac was great in snow and offroad, but weak carcass and harder to balance than the Nitto's or Toyos.

Do you have any pics of the Rigid lights on in the dark? Curious how the output is.

Cheers,
Salue

It's an SVI (the guy who put the S in STI's company). EDIT: missed the Infinity, but it's still an SVI ;) although I do have STI stuff as well.

Good info, I was going to go with the G2s but none in the 315/75R16 size.

Check it out, check it out-ers. Clean enough to eat off of.
