This whole day ended up being unexpectedly great. New York Peak, Middle Earth, Knott Creek, Windy Gap etc. Great pics Cam.

The variety of terrain out here is unbelievable. Each basin and each range is entirely different. You can see the landscape evolve right before your eyes.

You can see where springs emerge from the ground by the patches of larger vegetation.

We make our way off of this mountain range, and are looking for a place to eat lunch. There are storms everywhere around us, and we can tell that we do not want to get caught on this trail if it is wet. We've hit a few samples of this (luckily on flat or downhills) and would likely become trapped if we had to climb up a wet trail.

Finally we make it to the end and stop to cook lunch. Andrew & I are on the schedule. We made some Junkyard Dawgs before we left, parcooked, and then vacuum sealed them. They are basically small batch, artisan crafted, sausage style hot dogs made from the finest free-range, ethanol-free, ethically tortured critters that money can buy. This time they were made from dry aged ribeye and strip steaks, pork belly, smoked bacon and some other beef. These cost over $10/lb in raw materials alone.

As mentioned storms were everywhere, so Alex pulled up and stretched out his awning over my tailgate so we could cook and eat in comfort and style.

The 'dawgs disappeared before I could take a picture.

We hopped on the pavement for a stretch to go top off our gas and water supplies...

It was whatever comes after epic on the meter.

...and capped off with an unexpectedly awesome campground! (which I don't have any pics of :()

At this point, we are on Highway 95, headed in the direction of McDermitt. I heard someone suggest getting a room in McDermitt and hunkering down for the night to escape the impending doom we see all around us. En route, we stop off in Orovada to get some gas and water.

Someone decided that the storms weren't a threat and we ducked into the Santa Rosa District of the Humbolt-Toiyabe National Forest and got back on our route.

We came to a camp Dan marked on the map for us, but conveniently forgot to mention looked like it could be a set for a horror movie. The entrance to the camp was an oasis of Aspen trees near a small creek. When we got into the camp, though, we could see the remains of a more permanent camp, a backwoods civilization that mysteriously disappeared into thin air. Just like the Mayans.

We couldn't piece together what happened, but it looked like someone had set up a long-term camp, and were then chased out in the middle of the night by something evil. We dubbed this place the Blair Witch Camp.

There was an old pop-up camper, still set up but the sides long rotted away. There were large tents with actual beds that still had mattresses and bedding like you might use at home. Then there was weird stuff, like a waterwheel that was expertly crafted but never put to use. The inhabitants had dammed up the creek, which was now very full and starting to intrude into the camp.

Cursed or not, this was a sweet camp, so we were staying.

Alex served up some of that horrible North Carolina style BBQ (haha, just kidding) and served up some wine that even impressed the California winos. We also took the opportunity to induct Andrew into the Brotherhood of Dudes by taking him on his first Snipe hunt. We were unsuccessful - we actually bagged one, but he cut his way out of the plastic trash bag with his sharp beak. Maybe next time.

We also kept hearing a weird noise. It sounded like someone kickstarting a single cylinder four stroke dirtbike and then couldn't keep it running. We thought we were being haunted by the camps deceased inhabitants, but we later found it to be the mating call of the grouse, after we spotted one calling to the babes, similar to this though faster...

The lost civilization left behind a mountain of treasure too big to inventory. One thing that stuck out, though, was a totally b!tchin' fire pit, which by putting into service, we hoped would bring the tortured dirt bike riding ghosts a little peace.

Alex needed to break in his new Puma air compressor, so Tom, channeling his inner redneck, used it to make a fire hotter than the earth's core...

After Epic on the meter: FULL-ON-EPIC-O-CITY!!

The next day it went to FULL-ON-DOUBLE-RAINBOWS-OVER-EPIC-O-CITY!!

It climbed even higher after that before the needle eventually hit the peg and broke off.

The saying goes..."the worst day on the mountain...is better than the best day at work..." (or something like that ;). When the spressoWAGON was helplessly mired in mud, ditto for my shoes , waiting for a tow out...I was actually second guessing that saying :D

After $30 in quarters and 3 separate rounds of self-serve spray-a-thons...the LC is still depositing Nevada mud, onto my M&D's driveway, each time it rains (which has been almost daily since I arrived at their place in Omaha 10-days ago!).

Keeping posting...and never end Cam!

I thought we were gonna have to call your truck in stolen:D

You're telling me! Believe me...I thought about the last resort, after our last ditch effort of pooling all our recovery gear, of living there until it dried up. Given all the rain they kept getting...I think I'd be out of beer by now :D

The next day had us crossing even more new and unique terrain.

We had a water crossing, where some took the opportunity to bathe their trucks. We only thought they were dirty at the time. We had no idea of what lay ahead that day.

Eventually we made our way to the Owyhee Desert, which seemingly goes on forever.

As dry as it looks in the pics, we could tell that there was some serious rain here in the days preceding.

It went from this...

To this...

It was a 50/50 mix of mud, standing water and dust. I ran through my previously full windshield washer bottle and had to top it off with water at least once.

None of us could believe how much mud we were seeing. Without the rain that caused it, though, we would not have been able to see all the green that we did. We came through at a rare time.

It was in this stretch of travel that we came across a strange situation. Out in the middle of nowhere, we roll up on a group of cowboys. Well, at first glance they looked like cowboys. Except they were dressed a little too perfectly. And their mustaches looked fake. And they had a cute cowgirl with them. And a Mexican, who was trying to dig out their buried-to-the-frame 5-ton truck with a shovel while the rest stood around looking like cowboys.

It looked like the truck got stuck a few days before when the mud was bottomless goo, and had now been fully concreted into place as the mud dried.

They asked if we could help, but not wanting to break our own equipment (way undersized for the job at hand), we politely declined and wished them luck.
