Hi Guys,

I've recently picked up my new 1HZ powered HZJ75 Ute...

my only issue with the vehicle (it's otherwise completely immaculate) is that it is intensely hard to start in the morning after it's been sitting overnight. Mornings here are around 3-4 degrees celcius (45-50 F??) and I know for a fact the fuel isn't freezing over or anything like that.

The vehicle is equipped with dual batteries, it actually uses BOTH to start the car at the same time for the amp's. The starter motor turns over wonderfully, the glowplug light comes on, goes off after a bit etc. I generally cycle the plugs 2-3 times before I crank the engine, cycle the plugs another two times, crank it again for a while then it MIGHT start. Recently i've had to use ether. Is this just a case of "get new glowies"? Or is it something more sinister?

Recap: Starter works fine, batteries work fine, fuel delivery is spot on... where is the problem?

Also, when it does decide to fire, it's usually acting like it's flooded and blows the most INSANE amount of smoke out the tailpipe for a good 5-8 seconds. Smoke varies from grey to black.

Know anyone with a compression tester? This will at least eliminate compression, and you can look into other issues.

Sounds like it could be glow plugs.
Does the glow plug relay work at all?
Do any of them fire?
Can you measure it with a voltmeter?

What if you manually jump them from the battery (for 5 or 6 seconds)?
Try using some jumper cables. Would it start then?

My girlfriends 3B had this problem. The glow plugs did not work and you had to crank it for awhile until it would fire. When it did start it would have clouds of black and white smoke for 5-10 seconds.
Sounds like it could be the same problem.

Cheers,
Nick

strange, my 1HZ will start even without the gow plugs at those temps (i have my glows wired to a momentary toggles switch). Rough idle and smoke is common for a cold diesel until it warms up. If I use my glows though it smooths out/stops smoking almost instantly. the glow plugs would be a good place to start but I would think it should atleast start at those temps without them. Maybe try bleeding the injectors as well?

Funny thing I should mention about my HDJ81.
I noticed that my glow plugs will not fire until about 5' celcius.

Even at that they only come on for 2-3 seconds.
Starts fine, just like it is warm.
But that might have something to so with the 24volt starter. :)

Cheers,
Nick

Ya, that's what made me question compression 1st off. The healthy HZ, at 600psi should start like you mention VT. No comparison to a 3B at all. I was suprised the 1st few times I flashed a 1HZ.

Nick...the DI engines typically flash easier then their IDI brethern. The 12HT, 13BT and 1HD-T will not glow at all till getting close to 0C. ALso, in my experience the HZ will flash much easier when cold then a 3B.

Entran, thinking...but if it is not compression, and your valve set is in specs...then look to fuel. Strange it would belch black and not white though, if it is a cold start issue. For the rest of the day it starts fine?

It's definately a cold start issue. Once the car's been running (even if it's not warm), you cycle the plugs and it fires first crank... ALL the time. Just getting her started in the morning.

I might just go get a new set of glowies and shove them in. I've booked her in to get the injectors cleaned and the fuel system cleaned as well next week.

My 1HZ will not start without glowing when cold unless I crank the engine about 15 times.
I give it about 10 seconds of glow and it starts easily and for the rest of the day it starts straight away without glowing.
Its a new engine and pump

I wonder then if Nic is onto something. Is your starter in top condition? It is 12V...correct? My comparisons are from having 24V's crank it over...which spins it quite quickly.

In the 3B world you can till the difference immediately if it's getting spun by 12V or 24V.

Got a ohm meter? Check the resistance of each plug. Just take the busbar off 1st.

My HZ also takes a while starting if it sat all night. And out average temp here is 80 degrees.
I hit the toggle switch for the Glows about 8 secs. and she starts up instantly. You may have an issue with your glowplug controler relay, or maybe a few glowplugs are fried.

I'd check if your getting voltage to your plugs first. If you do, then I would pull the plugs and check them each by using a jumper cable and a battery to see if they glow red hot. This should only take a few secs. Be carful not to burn them out by shorting them on the battery too long. Also, Don't burn yourself. They get hot fast.
I 'm pretty sure its got to be either your glowplugs, or your controller relay.

good luck:cheers:

I got a new starter and a new 700 cca battery. It spins over like no compression gasser, fast!

My pump was rebuilt and adjusted on the bench to factory specs, although he did say to bring it back after 5000klm and he would dial it in on the dyno.
It dont blow any smoke according to my friends who have followed me.

Car's going in on friday to get tuned and new glowies fitted. Also having compression test done (again), the injectors cleaned and the pump tuned. Also fitting BOTH new batteries (Bond Ultimate 750CCA...actually 950CCA and a Bond Ultimate Marine Deep Cycle 600CCA). My dual battery setup drags current from BOTH batteries on start, so I very much doubt that's a problem. I just don't like "standard" batteries that require maintenance. I love dry cells.

My cruiser blows next to zero smoke unless of course going up some godawfully steep hill and i've got the foot flat. We'll see how it goes.

Let us know how it goes and what the shop says it is/was please. Curious and more info and the data bank.

Thanks
