so I won the raffle at the Bakersfield swap meet- a free ticket to join the 2018 Marlin Round Up on the Rubicon Trail, this september...

Marlin has reservations about the pig on the trail as it is currently outfitted. while I have clearance around the bed, the hitch hangs out back pretty far, and the SUA suspension is going to leave the fenders prone to damage. He also says I need a front locker, and some under armor, and 35s...

So what is the advice of the sty?

1. Lift the pig and get her dressed for battle?

2. find a ride and take lots of notes?

c. find a donor with a ready rig and schedule and worthy reason to give the ticket to?

While I am awestruck by this opportunity, I also don't want to squander it.

Special thanks to @Marlin Crawler for the awesome gift!!!

@Glennmerkel @cruiserfj45 @bogus one @calico kid @Cruiserdrew @bobm et al...

Also, Shout out to Andy for putting on the show! (@skidplate ???)

Na, not Andy. I just help him out on occasion. Andy does deserve kudos , whatever that is, for putting on these events and keeping them FREE! Congrats on the win.

The stock Heeps do it with 31” and 33” tires, it’s just body panels unbolt them if you don’t want trail damage if not chicks dig rock rash, add the front locker and go have fun, don’t forget to take lots of pictures.

I'm thinking about going up there. I have 34s and a front locker, but I heard that it is possible with 31s as well. I dont mine some body damage as I have that new body waiting to get hooked up. I have to do some stuff to earn that project.
I have some friends that are interested as well. I hola at you when a date is set and we can see if you rig will make it.

You sure you really want to take s sprung under wagon without lockers and armor on the Rubicon? You can do it, but dang you are likely to be slow and get hung up a lot. With that said, you should still go.

No such thing a cheap front locker, but if your rear is locked, and you have front clearance, it will work.

The least work for the most gain is to do a spring over and a rear locker if it isn't already done. Couple hundred $ in RuffStuff parts, a couple of weekends welding/fabbing /grinding and it's done. With enough time you can add refinements like cut and turned front axle (highly desirable), power steering, front locker and a skid plate.

I don't exactly know the build of your truck, but I if you send me a link to the build thread, I'll make comments.

not sure where you are, but the suspension in this pig is coming out, you are welcome to any or all you want

Spring over pigs are way too tippy in my opinion.

Don’t trash your Pig. It’s a great trail and a great event but that would not be wise in my opinion.

If you do decide to go just go down and back to the springs from Reno.

Spring over anything is way too tippy, but for the Rubicon, it works. That was the stated goal. I fully agree that wagons are best left SUA. But, if you really want to off road in them. SOA just works. But it robs you of general usefulness. Difficult to take a SOA truck to the grocery store, for instance. I basically drive my 60 no where else other than a few off road trip in the sierra. But for that, it's great.

But 60 axles are a bit wider. The Pig. Not so much.

I think a proper SOA with clapped out flat springs is superb in looks. Ride. Usefullness.

It’s just a lot of work. Wrap bar. Cut/turn. Shock mounts. Possibly hanger relocation.

All for a wagon with a lot of unobtainable sheet metal.

Go buy a s*** box mini truck with 37s for $7000. Wheel it on the Con. Sell it for $7000 after.

I sort of agree. No reason to wheel a $$$ truck. But it isn't like this is a pristine FJ55, and if it's SOA, it's unlikely to get much sheet metal damage. In 10 years of SOA FJ60 and Rubicon/Dusy, I have 2 door dents and some scratches (in an FJ60, not an FJ55 but they are similar). Not that it was easy, but it's doable.

But SUA, it's going to get hurt. Maybe not to bad, but hurt. Figure one big dent every Rubicon.

The more I read, the more I think maybe I'm the rock stacker! I'm gunna hafta do some serious thinkin here... the notion of buying a more appropriate rig is wise, as is the rec for SOA - and to simply remove the dangling dongles prior to the trip...Realistically, I'm not going to have the time and resource to get her ready before the show- certainly not if I am going to the PP18 ( I AM )... I mean, a mans got to have his priorities, right?

Exactly! Give your invite to someone with a rock bouncer and focus on the Pig party! :) Besides, you're a shoe in for first prize in the "custom" category at the Show-n-Shine.

UNCKLE!!!

Man if I had the time... if you’re big enough to do it, you’re big enough to do it. Lmk... it seems like a lot of pressure... I just wanna have fun. Too old to assign myself unneeded stresses!!! Although maybe not smart enough to follow thru on that. Doh!

Just build it! Spring over rear takes 1 weekend, spring over front 2 weekends. Few $ hear and there and it's done.
