If you don’t drive it in the salt it won’t rust ... LOL I remember a sales guy telling a customer at a dealership my uncle owned .
You think you hate it now ... Wait til you drive it .
You spend big bucks for these trucks a some states like the greater northeast apply salt by the inch .
Salt destroys ... I have a little 4x4 Tacoma I use in the winter for those salt / snow events . I coated the underside of the Tacoma to stop / slow the rust .
I will be doing the same to my land cruiser .

I’m looking at a 200 series with the following undercarriage. I’m not as familiar with vehicles from the northern states/New England. Is this an acceptable level of surface rust for a 2016? It doesn’t appear like anything to be concerned with, but as I mentioned, I'm used to southern cars where this isn’t usually an issue.

Looks good for CT standards. Buy, drive, and enjoy

I’ve got a 2007 LX 470 and a 2013 LX 570. Both are South Texas trucks. The 200 had/has more surface rust since I got it in 2017. The 100 series is virtually clean, acquired in 2011.

Weld joints on the 200 are most noticeable. Not bad, but I was surprised after having the 100 for so long.

Looks good to me, having lived in Massachusetts before

Finally a slightly rusty 200! The coating, or in most cases the lack thereof, on the 200 is my only real disappointment.

Note the spare tire is mounted upside down and it’s not as secure as it should be.
Congrats on the new ride!
Great catch!! Thanks for that. I’ll have them flip it before I pick it up.

Hello all,

New to the forum. Looking to buy a 2020 200 series from Wisconsin to join my 2001 Land Cruiser. How much to I need to worry about corrosion to the undercarriage from snow and salt? I spoke with the service manager of the Toyota dealership where the car had been undergoing regularly scheduled service and he stated there was no rust to speak of that was seen. The car will be coming to the southeast. Would one or two winters of salt and snow be enough to significantly damage anything on the LC?

It is very prone to rust. However, if they right then get some lp4 under there asap. I have decent rust from a couple ski trips...

Running through a car wash won’t cut it. I use a watering wand for summer plants upside down so the watering wand gets year round use.

it’s pretty easy to blast the underside of the truck with Fluid Film on spray cans. It took four to five cans for the 4 runner, same for a cruiser. When I got the Tundra (and my daughter got one too) I sprung for a compressor and sprayer.

Because of the work, the 4Runner, now 20years old has zero rust.

I had a 2018 GMC Truck from Wisconsin earlier this year and that thing was horribly rusted. Frame looked terrible.

I'd ask for photos just to verify, then treat any spots with converter and coat with fluid film.

I bought a 2013 LX 570 from Nebraska hoping for 0 rust, but it still has the normal issues (seams, rear axel surface, some bolts, skid plates). Compared to Wisconsin/Michigan standards though it's looking pretty great for 9 years old.

--

Before buying I saw a 2014 from Michigan and the surface rust was quite extensive - worse than my Nebraska 200 series, but not as bad as that GMC frame. I also saw a 2017 from Tennessee in person and it looked really clean - I just went with the 2013 to save $17k for the same mileage vehicle.

Thanks for the help! My cousin is going to take pictures tomorrow and Ill try to post them. I

Here are pictures taken by my cousin of the undercarriage. These are the only places with any rust visible. None really noted on the frame. To my it doesn't look that bad but I would like to hear from those on here with way more knowledge and experience than myself. Sorry for the poor image quality.

This is no factor at all. No issues from my view.

My 2015 is rust free and it spent its entire life in RI and MA. First owner (first 3 years) did not rust proof it, and despite 50k miles it was super clean, just tiny rust spots on welds around trailer hitch under the rear bumper cover, easily addressed. 30k miles later of my miles and thorough application of Corrosion Free every year, it is staying rust free. Oil based rust proofing such as Corrosion Free, Fluid Film or Krown work really well. I am partial to Corrosion Free since it does not drip much and it does not stink.

Are there any authorized locations that you know apply the fluid film or corrosion free? Krown locations are quite far from my place in CT. Thanks.

There are some in NH or even in MA. I go DIY route. Not too bad of a project and I know it's done thoroughly. They sell an excellent sprayer kit. The first application is the worst, each one after that is essentially touch up as Corrosion Free stuff lasts really well.

Wish I had a lift though... :(
