last thing i can add is, i'm not sure if any of the iphone apps will get you transmission temperature... which is why i keep coming back to ultragauge.

over all, it seemed like an alpha design, not even yet beta. the interface was really rough, not all of the interface components shared the same design que's, almost like different departments were designing each component without any idea of what the others were doing. after you got into an app, you had to get out using the handset instead of the head unit, in order to get into anything else eg getting back to radio from map. no way to run two "apps" at once, ie no mapping while listening to the radio etc. there were many other issues, not all coming to mind right now, it was a few months ago. you can read more on amazon reviews, they (bad reviews) are all accurate.

beyond all that, the sound was cheap and only 2 RCA preouts.

all of this is surprising since pioneer also makes the AVIC which is probably the best iphone integration HU on the market. they have a great idea here, just a lousy integration. i would rather see a simple airplay to HU than what they've done with appradio.

I can live without 4V outs, but only a single pair is a bummer. If you want to preserve the fader you're stuck with line level outs. It does also look like Pioneer now enables the home button to close the app without going to the iPhone to do so.

you can use iCam for iPad backup camera... just need to wire up a IP cam.

but... I'm not going to be putting the iPad in the vehicle on every trip where I would be bringing a phone on every trip.

you're right on this one too. Ultragauge seems to be the leader in this as it's a vehicle specific feature and they seem to specialize while everyone else is generic.

thanks for your input bkgee. I guess I'll have to spend more time noodling on what to do. I'd really like to consolidate down to as few devices as possible and this technology seems promising, just perhaps not as mature as it could be.

oregon, i use iCam on my phone as well, works great! wiring an IP cam on the truck is beyond my capabilities tho. however you can use this app phone to phone, so if you have an old iphone laying around, just mount it on the bumper and you're done. even does sound, and takes stills if you want. yep, get the digits on your tailgaters.

i'd like to run the whole show on my phone too, but as you noted the tech isnt quite there yet. i hope one of the majors will just add airplay to there HU, that would go a long way, or all the way, to solving this problem.

No sat radio / option.

This is the first gen of this for Pioneer... but you need to do something.

That I do! :) I gotta believe that an App radio is the wave of the future. Gotta be less expensive to manufacture and it promises to do a great job of consolidating information and dash real-estate. But... it seems like this technology is where PC DVR's were about 8 years ago, full of promise but lacking in full integration. That said, as long as there isn't a necessity for a platform change Pioneer should be able to continue to update the firmware and I would expect the technology to evolve as time goes on. From what I read they did a pretty good job of responding to iOS 5.

I have the GoPoint BT1. It works well.

I bought this one because it connected via Bluetooth, instead of locking up the Wifi on your iOS device, so you can still stream music. I just ordered a second one for my other car.

The apps that it comes with are pretty basic, but work well for reading and clearing CELs. If you want to do anything fancy with it, expect to the by the app "DashCommand" (Another $39.99?).

Also, Amazon sells the BT1 for $119, but you can get it straight from GoPoint for $69.99:

Cool, the BT one would mess up the BT on the phone. I did not see a wifi set up on their web site

I bought a cheap ( $15) Bluetooth obdii reader from Oz eBay. I haven't tried it yet as someone said I'd need to jailbreak my iPhone 4S. Not sure about that.
I also bought an UltraGauge which I installed yesterday and which replaces my Scangauge 2. Love it so far!!

Installed the Wifi OBDII and ran it with the EngineLink app.
It's fairly basic, but does the job (especially engine temperature was important for me since my gauge isn't reading and I have been unable to fix the problem aka find a cable connector to connect the wiring harness to the sending unit).
All in all for for under $50 for the OBDII and the app I am quite happy (not so much when I read my around-town fuel consumption - 6mpg average...).
One thing it doesn't pick up is the fuel tank level which was surprising to me, but it does show error codes and (supposedly cam also reset them, I don't have any right now so I can't test it).
One question for the technically less challenged:
What is the correct range for the Boost/Vacuum? Mine shows: -14.7 psi

dragon - 6mpg?! The hell, that is crazy

Yep:

Well, it was a lot of driving around time getting in and out of the car, but even on the open road ( we don't really have highways, even the Pan-American is only one lane each way) it doesn't get over 12 MPG .... still love the car though.
