Intro - new 1966 FJ40 owner

This part is referred to as the bezel. It goes around the headlights and is supposed to be oriented like this with the thick side up. People new to FJ40s often don't know their's is on incorrectly and suffer a few insults from the purists here. A few early year cruisers actually had "Land Cruiser " stamped into the thick part but it was discontinued for reasons unknown to me. You have an amazing 40, thank you for sharing!

This is the FJ40 owners equivalent of, “your fly is down”.

The hood has no windshield bumpers, nor any holes to mount them. Interesting.

Oh man, that’s hilarious. And you replied to it first post and everything, lol. I’ll be flipping it around immediately!
Don't worry about the lack of bumper pads and spring loaded hooks on the hood used to hold the windshield, early hard top models did not have them.

Every screw on that bezel except one is stripped out and heavily rusted, so its probably been on upside down for 20+ years. I have to bear the burden of shame for someone elses mistake for now...

I did order another rearview from custom cruisers, but definitely will hang onto the old one just in case.

Good news: Removed fill plug on transmission and nice clean fluid ran out.
Bad news: Removed fill plug on transfer case and.... nothing. Dry as a bone.

Theres a seal between the tcase and trans. When the seal fails the tcase pumps it's gear lube into the trans. @shipmag sells a bypass hose that goes between the trans and tcase so the tcase won't starve.

It's your 40, you do what you like. I dont like my bumpers welded to the frame. I'd cut the welds, then bolt it on.

) Windshield wipers were in the glovebox. They replaced the front windshield and put new rubber on it, but every other piece of rubber needs replacing all the way around. (Edit - the wipers mount from the top, which is why they were removed). I tried turning them on and they did not work... i think it needs LOTS of electrical cleanup, so that will be a fun project. (Anyone know where I can get those orange junction boxes under the hood? They definitely need replacement)

Did you get the wiper blades too or just the arms? The blades are hard to come by. I also heard about the VW blades being used but not sure if they are just drop in replacements. There is a member that restores the motors if you want to go that way. The orange electrical junction strips are still available new from Toyota... 82670-30020

Good question about the wipers - I just got the arms with it, not the blades... I will look into the VW ones. Thanks for the part number on the junction boxes, went ahead and ordered a couple. Also talked to Lou and got the bypass hose for the trans/transfer case. Will need to fix the leak on the PTO part of it, shouldnt be too hard. Window regulator is in, 2" receiver hitch is in, and while chasing down the numbers on the engine block I realized its not a Chevy 350, its actually a 1969 Chevy 307.... judging by the amount of dirt/dust on the bellhousing, it was probably converted in the 1970's. Id rather take reliable over power, so im ok with it. No leaks, but I do need a fan shroud and lower radiator hose to make it a bit more road worthy. (radiator hose is literally disintegrating)

Chasing down electrical stuff to get lights/blinkers/gauges going and then it should be ready to register.

You might look at Gates 20573 for the lower hose and Gates 20416 for the upper hose. They should work. You might need to trim them little.

Oh man, that is awesome. I was chasing the electrical last night and turned the wiper switch on and heard the motors humming, so it looks like I just need the blades and should be good to to.
EDIT: They had wiper blades for a 66 in stock! I think the only difference is they are 12" vs. 11".

Biggest things right now:
1) When I put oil the transfer case, its leaking from the front PTO coupling (easy fix) and from what looks like the emergency brake? PO painted over it, and there is a LOT of buildup at that spot... mightve been leaking a while.
2) Drivers side front wheel has brake fluid leaking out on the inside of the wheel. Outside connections look fine, so im assuming broken line inside the drum itself.

I have decided not to run the PTO winch for various reasons - I need to remove the PTO side off of the transfer case and just put a plate on. Does anyone know where I can get just the plate/gasket?

I think you can easily make the plate out of 3/16" aluminium, and cut the gasket to fit. Aviation Permatex a few spots on the transfer case a sheet of heavy gasket paper. Take a small ball peen hammers and tap around the case and bolt holes - the gasket will be a prefect fit. Remove gasket and place on the sheet of aluminium - drill holes for the bolts and cut the plate on the outside of the gasket.

You should look in the classifieds and perhaps post in the wanted.
