Hello. I am looking to to see if there is anyone interested in getting custom storage built for their rig this winter? I am a Contractor in Harwinton, Ct. SNS Building and Remodeling is the name of my company. We build and finish a lot of cabinetry in the shop and I would like to expand to SUV storage solutions if there is interest. We take a lot of pride in our work and delivery high quality craftsmenship and customer satisfation.

I currently have a storage unit in the back of my 96 Cruiser 80. It serves as a TON of storage as well as a sleeping platform. Both sides flips up on European hinges. Front storage flips up. 2 Large drawers. It is by far my favorite mod I have had in any wheeler/camp mobile

Below are a few pics of my setup that I built last year. I am willing to build to suit individual needs. I did not use drawer slides to cut cost and no moving parts to break in the future. Draw slides can be used as per request. I can build boxes, carpet/etc, and install or just build and ower install. All options are open.

Let me know what you guys think. Opinions/etc. Scott

I like it...nice and clean. The carpeting makes it look OEM.

I'd be interested to know how well the slides work fully loaded. I used 24"Accuride 100lber's and so far so good. My guess is there's maybe 50 lbs per drawer.

What's the price base?

Good job!

There are no slides. The box's are just smaller than the opening. They slide well. Very strong and nothing to break. Also no Big $ to spend on slides. I cleared all the wood with Latex poly to keep them from swelling/etc. I keep then rubbed with bee's wax.

Base price would be $1350 built, carpeted. Cheap installation for local mudders. You lend a hand.

If I get a chance to do a 40 or 60 etc. I think I would give a first time customer a deal so I could get a design templated for future use.

This is a smokin deal. Get a set quick before he changes his mind :) Scott does very nice work. (thats from one finish carpenter to another)

Thanks Niall! I appreciate the compliment. I really wasn't planning making these for the pubilc but I was reading someone else's thread on "Storage" so I was looking at the pricing and avail. on some kits like Slee/etc. that are sold and WOW are they some big $. My unit serves it's purpose very well and was cost effective. I did not go nuts on expensive hardware/etc BUT it does not mean that I can't tallor to that if it is someone's preference. I'll will build high end units with dove tail drawers and cashmere wrap if someone wants that but might be overkill for others.

Hardware can ratchet up the cost fast, and sometimes overkill. I think ball bearing drawer glides are overvalued for this application. Don't get me wrong I think the KV epoxy ball bearing glides are a great product, in stationary things like a house, but in an off-road application its hard to keep them true. I have them on my set of AT drawers but I'm going to remove and replace with maple-on-maple runners with 3 coats of butchers wax. If my white LC80 were up here I'd sell the ATs and have Scott build me a set. Under the category of life that "the cobblers children never have shoes"

If you roll your rig will this go flying? And everything in it? I see no mention of it being bolted down.

Yes it is bolted down via the third row OEM mount points. The 8 bolts go through the main "box" which is 3/4" material. Def. not going anywhere in a flop.
Flip up side storage and front storage have latches.

think there is anyway to sneak a sub enclosure in the front with shorter drawers?

Yeah, for sure. Funny you say that. I almost did just that but I through my audio ideas out for more storage. If you can picture this I see the two big boxes about 6-8" shorter. The front most storage can be shrunk in half width wise but this would also add the 6-8"" to length (front to back) The other section could fit a 8" or 10" in a bandpass type box. Would be a fun project.....

Here's a great example someone built for a 100 series.

I'm planning to do something similar. One drawer will be full length. The other only 26" deep with an enclosure for two 8" subs with .65 cf each firing toward back seat.

^^^^Exactly what I was describing but with one sub. Every sub has different requirments for cu. ft. needed. Also some need sealed, or ported box. You should start looking for a sub that requires minumul cu. ft. A bandpass style enclosure would be the best so the sub is not exposed at all. This would require a very shallow sub/magnet. PM me if you want to narrow down some details.

****just saw your details under pic. you know of the cubic ft. already. Are you planning on building the system yourself?

Scrowley - yes I am planning on building this myself for my 100 series. I was just hijacking your thread because I'd already made plans for the sub enclosure in the storage system :)

I don't know the total height of the systems you use for the 80 series, but the 100 series are all ~11". This means 8" subs. I'm going with Image Dynamics ID8s. Relatively low power requirements, low price and sound good in sealed boxes ~.60-.65cf. http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_22182_Image-Dynamics-ID8-D4-V.3.html

Here's a quick and dirty sketchup drawing of my proposed setup. I'm sure you could do something like this, or a setup with 1 sub for the 80-series owner above who was asking.

Very nice storage scrowley. I have been considering a storage solution, though in a holding pattern until the budget is there. I'm in NY/CT as well.

Also curious, I checked out your photos on Photobucket - did you coat your underbody? How did you do it if so and are you happy with it would you recommend it? I have a clean underbody since my truck was a New Mexico 80 until this winter and I'd like to keep it that way.

Great work.

James

also forgot to ask - have you considered a sleeping platform on a hinge that could go over the folded 2nd row seat? I'm trying to figure out how to have a straight flat platform from front seat to tailgate.

^^^^I did undercoat the frame. I pressure washed, scraped it, sanded, wire brushed, etc. Taped everything off including full body. I then brushed SEM on everything I could as it is applied full strength. Comes out nice and thick with a brush. Then I back sprayed SEM rust shield thinned with a urethane grade fast dry reducer to get it all 100%. Then after it dried for a couple weeks I sprayed Corrosion X over all the worst spots, brake lines, etc. I have done the same process to a bunch of trucks. It works well and is a TON of labor.

If your frame is good now. I would just keep treating it with a product like Corrosion X Heavy duty. BUT if you are thinking of painting I wouldn't put on a treatment first.

On the sleeping platform If you want the storage the same height as the seats the boxes would have to be approx. 4-5 inches taller than mine. I didn't want them that tall. BUT if you wanted it perfectly flat yes a hinged platform could be built for over the second row seats. I however don't mind it a little inclined. I usually have enought blankets and stuff that I put in there so it's relatively flat. It does the trick for camping solo in the woods.

thank you scrowley. my frame is very good now, so I'll look into Corrosion X for the time being.

will hit you back when I'm thinking of a storage / sleeping setup. the normal setup is probably fine, I didn't know it would be +4-5" to get it perfectly flat, thought it might just be a couple of inches. will definitely reach out to you when the time comes it's great to finally see a Mud craftsman that's not at least 2,000 miles away in the Rockies or West Coast. and your truck looks great btw

happy trails,

J
