Intake gunk and funk

I'm doing the HG and in the process of the tear down. Check out all the crap in my intake manifold. It almost looks like water/mud has been in there.

What's your thoughts? Normal?

I suspect since the air intake hose was completely split in half and since the interior of the hood looked like it had been baja'd through the mud plenty of times that would be the case.

That is PCV and EGR, great idea huh?

Some install a PCV catch can to reduce/eliminate this buildup. It's normal, though not desirable.

Really? Wow okay. I guess I need to read up on what the EGR does.
