So, how livable is an Ineos Grenadier as a DD? I am considering a replacement for my 08 Tacoma (bought new) in the next 2 years. The Tacoma has been my DD, camping, skiing, hiking, biking, offroading rig the entire time. I am at Ski resorts 3 days a week, both in winter and in summer for skiing and mountain biking.

I am waiting for the used prices to come down a bit over the next 2 years, but would a Grenadier be a good replacement as a DD for my Tacoma or would I be better off in a GX550 OT+? Plan would be to drive it for 20 years.
The Ineos build quality is amazing. Satisfying vault-like door closing, unlike the Toyota tin can feel. Robust frame. No squeaks, rattles, etc.
It's a brick with external gutters trying to push it's weight through the air, and could use more sound deadening to dampen road noise.
The B58 and ZF 8 speed is a very good combo. The whole package with the front and rear lockers is a beast offroad. I would not want one without the lockers.

I DD my Grenadier mostly, then go on spurts between my 2 80’s.

I like each for a different reason, but I have nothing but good to say about the Grenadier after 40,000 miles!

They really are fantastic vehicles, very well built. More sound-dampening material is about the only thing I'd change. I daily mine for the most part as of late. It's the most fun I've had in a vehicle in years.

alright I have been driving this all day and I absolutely do not like it.

Acceleration feels a little sluggish. engine whines like a Corolla. So much engine noise in the cabin and none of it is pleasant.
Transmission shifts well though and going up a mountain pass, it was in the right gear quickly.

Steering feel is awful.
Heavy. Does not return to center. Turning radius of a space shuttle. It feels like driving a car on flat tires.

When I let go of brakes and let it roll, it shudders to get in gear and everything rattles.

There’s a lot of drivetrain vibration in the cabin. Pedals. Even the glovebox.

It’s loud inside at highway speeds. At 55+ wind noise is INSANE.

you hear a lot of tire doom doom sounds. Low end dooooom. Sounds like someone next door is playing the bass drum. This alone is a deal breaker.

Sunroof has no shade. And it’s right over your head.
WHYYY. I was getting baked.

Rear visibility is POOR. Between the door and the tire, can’t see s***.

AC controls are terrible. It responds slow to temp dials.
You have to finesse with it and the numbers are like a size 8 font.

The speedometer is off to the side in the center. The center of the main dash is just warning lights. Could have at least put a speedometer and a horizontal strip for RPM.
This also wastes a lot of space for CarPlay. I kept having to look over to get my speeds right while an empty blank box was staring at me where a normal instrument cluster would be.

No visor mirror.

All in all, this makes my LX look like a Rolls Royce in comparison.

The Grenadior has 1700 miles on it.

The steering differences are well documented, as are fixes and remedies. The 2026 models have improved in that department as well. If you never drove an older Jeep CJ/YJ/TJ or older Defender, then you likely haven't experienced anything like it. It's extremely foreign by modern standards, but most come to find it more engaging. It blows any other 4WD out of the water off-road; that's where the handling excels.

The bongs and dings mostly get resolved with a software update and by changing some of the settings. You get past everything being in the center stack in a few days, and most come to prefer it, myself included. I fly airplanes regularly, I know where my gauges are, and I reference them when needed. I need to be looking outside, focused on traffic, obstacles, and where I am headed. The same goes for in the vehicle. We've become spoiled in modern vehicles with everything in our face at all times, a monster screen and HUD, so much so that you find an analog and simple experience to be "terrible", outdated, and not informative enough. A sign of the times IMHO.

If you aren't used to driving a domestic HD truck, then you won't enjoy the ride in these; you've got a bougie behind from spending most of your time in a luxury SUV, which doesn't make it bad, it just means you prefer soft, and that's ok. The road noise is not as abhorrent as you describe (my spoiled wife would agree), but again, everyone experiences sound and noise differently, which makes it subjective. The one you're driving has 32's on 18" wheels, they don't have much in the way of a sidewall, and it's quite stiff as well. That'll add to the perceived ride and cabin noise.

Rear visibility is s***, there's no denying that, but that's why most add a Wolfbox mirror, a game-changer. The Safari windows aren't my favorite, and that's why I bought one without them, but again, personal preference. Too much sun coming through them for your taste, well, they make shades and tint for that, easy fix. Visor mirrors are for women to check their hair and makeup. Strap one on if you think you need it.

Your complaints aren't anything new; many feel disappointed and want so much more. Adaptive cruise, blind spot monitoring, keyless entry, remote start, push button start, ventilated seats, adjustable lumbar, better sound system, larger screen, more gauges, bigger side mirrors, etc., etc., etc. And for those that desire such things, I say that you've missed the point of the vehicle entirely. There's a plethora of vehicles on the market that offer those luxuries, literally almost every other vehicle out there lol. This is supposed to be a modern take on an otherwise analog experience. You get modern niceties like CarPlay, heated seats, backup camera, a more modern engine, etc., but stripped of all of the fluff. If you're not one to embrace that, then this definitely isn't the vehicle for you, and that's ok, it's not for most.

Luckily for you, you got to experience one free of any financial or emotional commitment, and you get to return to your preferred vehicle without anything lost.

Oh it drives like a tractor because it has Carraro axles similar to a John Deere. Its a love it or hate it vehicle. I loved it and wanted to keep it forever, but let it go when I got tired of not being able to get local oil changes and started having to repair my driveshaft.

Holy bejeezus if I had a dollar for every excuse...lol.

Make it $100...this sh*t is expensive..

Not an excuse, just an explanation. I agree, it's not for everyone, but for those of us who have them and love them, there's nothing else that compares. You have to understand what it is and what it isn't and try not to blend the two. And yes, everything for these is like triple the cost, that's another detractor.

I had a deposit on mine as soon as it opened up in 2021. I was in for the long haul. The dealer only service situation was only learned once it landed, then the Achilles heel driveshaft started rearing it's ugly head. I didn't turn on Ineos and get negative. I still am a big fan of the platform and hope they truly succeed. I just decided to come back to a 200 series before it got too late. They are just so simple to deal with on a daily basis. I'm getting to be a wuss as I age. 😝

I am getting used to the ridiculous turning radius and also the steering feel.

I cannot get used to the low end rumble sound. I am wondering if something is wrong or if it’s just the way these tire + suspension combo is. It’s louder at lower speeds.

But man this car looks good.

My son-in-law bought one about 16 months ago… he initially loved it. I liked it but I have a Chevy High Country diesel pickup with all of those fluffy interior options. I was anxious to get deeper into it. I am a FJ40 guy for 5 decades. When I went to check his out one more time to begin the process of MAYBE trading mine in for one, he had traded it in on a cybertruck…? Now, he loves that cybertruck… I can’t get used to the non-conventional shape of it but it is something to look at on the inside. There is a new Grenadier dealer about 40 miles from my house and I plan on stopping in to get a bit more turned-on or turned off

Turning radius is fixed with a few washers and 5 minutes of your time to adjust the steering stops. It'll improve by 3-4' immediately. I have a King steering stabilizer on mine and it settled the steering some, but again, I am accustomed to power recirculating ball style steering from spending so many years in TJ's and LJ's. I had the same tire/wheel setup on the loaner we had for a week, and I wasn't impressed with the ride and sound from them. The steelies on mine and larger tires have far less resonance and rigidity.

The green wasn't in my top three colors, but it sure has grown on me since we bought ours, and I am starting to notice more on the road.

I’ll get one when they’re a few years older and 35-40k. I love this idea as a concept, but when a new one costs 80k, and a 1500 Denali or something else like that also costs 80k, it’s kinda hard to justify. For me, 35-40k is nice enough to drive around but also not too expensive where I would feel bad wheeling it

That Denali will be worth less in that same amount of time lol. I don't know if I see these getting down that low anytime soon, but who knows what the future holds.

Without reading this entire thread, am I understanding that you cannot change your own oil?

best I can tell (I don't own one) you cannot reset the "oil change required" type of maintenance light on the dash. Only the dealer can do that. IIRC you CAN change your own oil, but the OEM decided you CANNOT reset the light. That's ridiculous IMO if correct.

I know that BMW is talking about making a direct competitor to the G-Klasse.
I wonder if they might end up buying Ineos Automotive to have the Grenadier as the platform to do that.
I think this would solve the servicing issue as then the Grenadier could be serviced at BMW dealerships, plus they'd have BMWs supply chain and service departments. They'd also be able to offer a V8 spec'd version. A Grenadier with an S68 would be bonkers. (I got to drive a X7 M60i for a week in Florida and I Was rather impressed by something that wasn't a Toyo-Lex).

Yes, this is correct. Agile is working on software to change this issue.

Some have tossed out this idea. IDK if I see that happening, but I wouldn't exactly hate it if they did simply for the increased dealership network. 60% of their sales globally are in the US, so who knows if they'd be willing to give up sole ownership for the bulk of their revenue, but everyone has a price.
