Has any tried the Gentex Wireless Homelink Garage Door Opener in one of many blanks on their dash or coin slots on the center console of their FJ80?

If so, where is the best place to plug it in?

I've looked at that product myself, and had the same question

Also looked at a Gentex mirror w/ Homelink built in, but now I'm eyeing up those mirror/camera units instead...and they lack Homelink.

I really hate the old school opener clipped to my visor. And prefer the additional security a hardwired opener tied to ignition on provides (can't smash a window of my truck parked outside, and open the garage). Which this doesn't provide as its battery powered. Back to the drawing board.

Good point about breaking the window and getting to the unit clipped to visor, I had not thought about that. While this unit is battery powered, it does seem much more discrete than an opener clipped to the visor, not sure the average thief would even think to check the dash.

I’ve not given much thought to being able to open the garage after a vandalized truck, but I’m almost also certain my 23 Tundra Homelink works without the ignition on.

I just hate using the visor to clip a bunch of crap. Why in the 90s we didn’t think about things like sunglasses, cups or openers!

Here is what I did literally decades ago, which is weird. Hid the opener inside the dash, wired it to the oem switch.

Anybody try this? Does it fit? Love the solution. Two buttons is great--one for the ranch gate and one for the garage.

You made my day. No more being jealous of my wife's 200... :P
And I added the Gentex mirror but those require some sort of repeater to work with my modern opener, so I don’t use the mirror buttons. This unit does not require any wiring and programs in about 30 seconds. Brilliant.

Just a word of caution with Homelink. Apparently the company was sued several years ago and had to change the operating protocol causing a lot of incompatibility. I recently installed a new Chamberlain garage door opener to replace a 20 year old unit. The new opener control no longer works with the other 20 year opener I have. You have to buy another device with its own transmitter which totally lacks proper security of the new opener to get it function. The new door opener is also incompatible with the built-in Homelink on my 2008 Infinity.

this is true I've had to deal with it. they do make a repeater that will let the old remotes/cars work with the new openers but it doesn't work as well.

Thats why I use this console button. It uses the new freq. My 2001 Gentex is v3. No worky

@FIDO96, what kind of operating distance are you seeing with console Homelink button?

My 2017 200 series with OEM Homelink in the mirror will open my gate and garages from at least 200'. @SNLC added a Gentex mirror to my '97 80-series and it works on the same openers as my 200, but only within about 40'.

I hit the button to open my driveway gate as I enter the cul-de-sac. Then the garage door as I turn into the driveway. I’d say within 100’
