I'm thinking about a V8 swap.

As stated, in planning for the oddesy out west in a couple years Were thinking of towing small off road type camper thinking that setting up and packing up camp
may get to be a bit of a pain. But with the 2F and a max loaded towing capacity of 3500 lbs. camper options aren't too good. Weighing the cost of a full rebuild and TBI swapping a low mileage V8 are pretty comparable. I'm thinking what the hell . . I know there's tons of swap threads posted but, Thoughts, advice, experiences would be appreciated.

There are a lot of purists that will prob disagree but I say go for it. A diesel swap or a chebby 350 are really the only good options if you really want to tow something. I love the tractor motors (Fs) but they are not exactly powerhouses. Also on the plus side for the 350, it's a well documented swap so it's not like you're blazing a new trail. Parts are cheap and plentiful too.

However it isn't cheap.
You mean the initial cost of let's say a crate motor & any adapters for trans choice? As far as parts, I would guess much cheaper with GM350 than 2f (water pumps, dizzy, etc) and more available ;)

There is no cheep engine swap.

I love the power of a V8 and currently have 2 driving swap cars and am working on the third. The expense comes when you add up ALL the parts and pieces it takes to do a swap.

It can be done more or less expensive obviously but the numbers always add up in the end.

For my first swap I bought a complete driving car for $600 but the last parts truck I bought for the 2uz swap into the 45lv was almost $3500.

s***, now I'm thinking of a Isuzu Diesel 4BD1T....... decisions, decisions.

If it was my personal truck I would go diesel. Either an Isuzu or a Cummins. More tow powa!

I would lean towards a Cummins 6BT (I am kinda bias) because if you could mate that up to your H55, you should get some pretty sweet MPG. As for cost and how difficult the swap would be, I have no idea.

I have a friend in Memphis that has some Cummins 4BT engines that I think he is trying to sell. I am not sure how well a 6BT would fit in the engine bay of a 60, that engine is :censor: huge.

We went SB350 with the Grand Wagoneer. You can read through our challenges in my sig link. It's definitely a tedious and expensive venture. You really gotta love your truck to put yourself through this process. Off the top of my head:

Rebuilt 350 - $2000
AA bellhousing plate - $500
Torque converter "keystone cops adventure" - $100
Electric fuel pump - $200
Computer reprogramming/wiring harness modification - $600
Radiator re-plumbing - $200
A/C modified/replumbed ($1000)
Converted steering column shifter to floor shifter - $250

Plus lots of little things, mostly electrical that had to be reworked. My only regret about the build was not putting in a GM transmission at the time. We didn't have the money and the TF727 was recently rebuilt at the time we did the engine swap. Even still, we doubled our gas mileage and probably the torque/hp too. Should do even better with an OD transmission.

Nick / Rick I've got a lot more reading to do for sure.
The thing I like the most about the Isuzu 4BD1T is that it's all mechanical no computer or electrical stuff to make things more difficult and it's a sleeved block
so as long as your block is in good shape it can be rebuilt numerous times, parts are readily available and it's touted as a 500K engine. I'm liking what i've read about the swaps so far the other plus is it's been done several times and there's lot's of great info out there.

subscribed..... Wish I could convert mine to a diesel, but I think it would be too cost prohibitive.

Yup. With decent parts availability in NA. Hell, I can get you a new short block within a week.

At what cost though??? :hhmm::hhmm: :grinpimp:

there are/were some 1hz for sale in the diesel section at a fair price. although they were out of mine trucks. though engine life may be questionable, according to some here on mud.

If you have to ask, you are not playing the same game.

I am definately not in that game. Engine swaps are great to watch other people do and pay for...

But just out of curiosity, what does one of those go for? 2k?
