$2000 of gears, bearings, and seals..... (higher gears for my transfer case to bring the revs down)

Here's what she sounds like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dASgTSIpux0

In an 80 series the idler gear/shaft is all one piece (and the low range gear slides on to the shaft with needle bearings). So this gear/shaft got replaced and was about 40 thou longer than the old one... So I had to use a thinner shim on the bearing...

I have taken it apart 4 times now. Tried a shim that is too tight, one too loose, and one just right (I think) per FSM measurement method. Any way I try it, it still whines. (The tight shim made it whine louder, but "just right" and "too loose" sound the same.)

The output shaft has 2 shims, and I also tried removing the thin one, but that made no difference.

Getting very frustrated here, although I can get the rear driveshaft off, oil drained, and rear housing off the t-case in about 15 minutes flat now! :deadhorse:

Anyway I think the noise is coming from the gears themselves. Anybody have any suggestions? Should I try thicker oil? Do gears typically "wear in" after a while and quieten down?

I have emailed Terrain Tamer to see what they think.... I sincerely hope I don't have to mail these things back to Australia and try to get a refund................... There is no way this is "normal".........

I added a "moly lube ltd. slip diff. additive" to my transfer case for the marks gears. Thing is, I did it right away so I have no idea on its effectiveness.

Closed cell foam over the tunnel and floor has netted some people good results.

Other than that I got nothing bro.

I am guessing you have installed straighter cut gears ? Straighter cut are generally stronger gears, but they tend whine. The helical gear gears are used in OEM applications, because they are quiet at the small expense of being not as strong. I remember the Marks gears I installed were irritating for the first few months. I tried sound proofing the transmission tunnel (ecofoam at Home depot) , but this was not very effective as the gear whine was radiating from the shifter and PTO lever since they were directly connected to the source of the noise.

Sounds exactly like my transfer before I rebuilt it.
Did you get a proper inch lb torque wrench to measure the output bearing preload?

what will these gears give you in the end?

Check the ozzy forums, pretty sure its the cut of the gears also...

Although it does sound like a worn out h55..?

These are definitely helical... I don't know how to measure the angle, but they look exactly like the OEM ones. This photo is of the Terrain Tamer gears (on the left... 3 in a row).

So, did your Marks gears quieten down after a few months??? Is there hope for me yet???

The FSM doesn't say anything about torque. Just to measure the depth to the bearing race with a straight-edge and feeler gauges and add a couple thou and that is your shim thickness to use.... Maybe different on a 70 series.

The ratio of these gears is 0.912:1. Factory is 1:1 for high range. So with my 4.10 diffs it would be equivalent to 4.10 * 0.912 = 3.74. I thought these gears would be easier to set up than diffs..... they probably were, but I wasn't expecting noise!

No noise before the transfer case gears..... Suggests trans is not the issue.

Listened the the video..... That blows.
In my 60 the t-case gears whine but so does everything else. Coupled with turbo noise , tire noise, diesel clatter and all the other Sixty noises it all kind of blends into the audible chorus that makes an 80's Land cruiser a Land cruiser. Now if I could just explain the odd smells!??

However, I doubt any additives or foam bits will dumb down the whine.

Just a last minute thought Nat. If you hold the transfer case lever while driving does the whine change..... Or go away?

Haha, well I hope it's not a worn out H55 cause.... well I don't have an H55, but my H151 was quiet before I installed these, so it's not the transmission. And it does make the noise in all gears, just harder to hear at low speeds in the video.

Yes I can make the noise change very slightly... also can "feel" the noise through the shifter... but I can't make it go away :( Makes the noise in low range too... Also makes a very faint noise, same pitch, with transfer case in neutral.

Ya, I know.....just saying sounds like a worn h55;).

Rebuilt a few tired h55s and the noise went away, bad bearings?

It does appear your gears are not strait cut..

Hmmmmm..... well I replaced all the bearings while it was apart... but maybe one is faulty? Could it be?

I got some fancy Royal Purple oil that I will try out tomorrow...

I think it is the nature of the beast, they may get quieter after some use or you will get use to the noise. Other option is turn the radio up, my sm420 use to make that noise too, you do get use to it or at lease I did. That was the sacrifice for the low first gear.

Yes I am learning that now reading all the threads on noisy Marks gears, etc. Wish I had realized this could be an issue... I just figured helical gears should be quiet.

The difference is though, a guy can sacrifice his highway noise to gain a better low range for crawling -- that makes sense. But the sole purpose of my higher gears is to improve highway driving. I have actually sacrificed a little bit of low range to improve high range...... except at this point I haven't improved anything. And what if I was still rocking the gasser? Noise would be much more noticeable -- at least I have a bit of diesel rumble to drown some of it out.

Anyway Terrain Tamer got back to me today, and they are shipping over a special tube of Nulon G70 which they say might help. I also went and spent $60 on Royal Purple synthetic..... didn't change anything.

It seems odd to me that every car manufacturer has figured out how to mass produce gears which are quiet on any type of oil, and yet these specialty guys like Marks and Terrain Tamer can't make theirs stop whining. I didn't think this was really cutting edge technology...

it is not cutting edge technology but neither is making a combustion engine work but change a few thou here and there or a few deg of advance on your timing and you can make a mess of things, with so much of this stuff the devil is in the details….it could be something as simple as a 1/2 deg on the tooth angle or w/e that is making the gears whine like they do, not trying to make excuses but something that is simple in principle is not always as to put into service.

how many km's do you have on the gears now? could it just be something that will go away after a break in period?

Well Terrain Tamer sent me another set of gears... They look identical except the output gear has pointier teeth. And since the whining noise seemed to be related to the output gear, maybe this will fix the problem?

Also, there are some tiny chips out of 4 of the teeth from shipping damage... I wonder if this will be an issue? Common sense tells me it shouldn't matter but???

Prolly be OK... but that is bull crap having been chipped...

Good luck..
