Identify This Part - Transmission Selector

Can you guys help me identify this part/what it does? I'm having some trouble finding help via the search. Maybe I just suck at searching today.

Anyways, this is in a manual transmission vehicle. I don't know what this thing is/does.

86-95 Trucks & 4Runners - Anyone know what this is? Strange Black Box. - I haven't seen this on any other vehicle (pictures or in person). Definately an add on, the way it was mounted was very aftermarket-ish. Notice the black box on the passenger side of the engine compartment......
