After some searching and phone calls, I've figured out my suspension. I would greatly appreciate some input from you folks. Remember this SOA thing is new to me and I don't want to foul this up. Here's what I would like to do.

Front axle from an FJ60 cut and turned for a spring over. Then use a rear axle from the same FJ60 for the rear. I'm looking at Proffits spring outboard kit to avoid putting the spring perches too close to the diff. The only issue I'm having is deciding what spring to run. Stock 40's or stock 60's?

I also have the Saginaw conversion and will be going with the 4x4Labs Cross over kit.

Is this a legit set up?

why do you cruiser guys all use the 4x4labs setup and not a setup where the drag link and tierod are on the front of the axle. Like us minis. What makes the added stress of the 4x4labs setup worth it...?

I'm marrying several different steering components together. I have a Saginaw conversion that needs to get connected to a 60 series axle that is getting cut and turned. This is the easiest solution in my book.

You probably wont need a cut and turn. I wouldnt be worried about pinion angle. you will need to run a single u-joint in the front anyway likely due to the short drivetrain and amount of droop you will be getting. And yes a u-joint operates at higher angles than a cv (or double-cardon).

My vote is for removing the lift blocks, removing the anti-wrap bar, lowering the front by putting in normal shaclkes and undoing anything else that lifted the front, removing 4 shocks, keep the rancho springs and beat the hell out of it at tft until you find you need something.

you over thinking it, and you have the "do-something desease"

oh yeah :flipoff2:

I hate to admit it but you make a lot of sense John. There's a lot on it that I really want to just straighten out for safety sake. Other than that, I really don't want to spend a lot of time or money getting it ready. I'm just cautious is all and really don't trust the PO's work. The whole lift setup on the 40 is evidence enough for me.

Actually im impressed with the work on it. (GOING FROM THE PICS) He seemed like a competent fabricator. Even his ideas were fine for a street truck. They just dont work off road. If he did the restoration then id say he knew what he was doing.

Then you drive it does it wobble or shake? When you engage 4wd and drive it at higher speeds (25-50 mph) does the front shaft shake?...

It had a bit of wobble and shake at speed, nothing too bad. Like I said though, I need to address safety related things like bad barely working drum brakes all around. I figured I'd do a disc conversion and be done with it. Then next thing you know I have a full set of axles from a 60 series for pretty cheap. I figured why cut up the stock axles when I can use the 60's for the SOA and be done with it. See where I'm coming from with this?

The more I think about this the more I'm leaning to just the brake swap. The suspension setup can be brought down to normal SOA height like John said. I'd rather not spend money where it isn't needed right now. I need to get the steering attached to the Saginaw and the wiring straightened out as well before I can run it.

Oh I'm also looking for a decent set of hubs. I'm doubting the functionality of my "Selectro" locking hubs.

Now your using your noodle

Just a bit of overload is all John. I have some definite ideas on what I'd like to do to this rig. I need to realize with time and patience I'd get it where I want it. I don't want to have a smarmy rig.

Have a priorty list, wittle away at your list and tweek the list as you wheel it. Don't do too much before you even wheel it, that could be a good way of throwing money at it that you didn't need to. Plus if you wheel as work on your list then you can feel the benefits of what you have done. I would think the first priority would be to bring down to earth then go get dirty!

Phil,
Fine spline? What are they? I might have a set in my pile of crap. Let me know which style. I am in the iddle of creating a small shop in the detached garage so stuff is in a pile. But if I know what you are looking for, I will dig.

If I have them, I will trade them for a cold heineken.
I'll look tonight or worse case this weekend.

Phil,
Found them a few minutes ago. They are mint! Almost flawless and new looking. You will be pleased.
Let me know if you are up here or passing through and I'll get them to you.
Shipping will cost you a few heinekens.....

All kidding aside, pm me your number and we'll solve it.

After screwing around the last couple of months I finally got the 40 in the garage. (Thanks Brian! I owe you!) I got the front end torn apart and will be taking the axle over to Tom for a cut and turn to correct the SOA setup. I've pulled the Saginaw with the rest of the steering and pitched the "extreme" Rauncho shock setup. The whole thing was scary ghetto fabbed.

I should have it all back together by the end of the month if my weekends work out as planned. Now time to spend a few sheckles and order up some parts.

I'll post pics later. Heading over to the Aunt's house for Orthodox X-mas and gorge myself on Serbian food!
