Hello,

I have a 1983 or so Toyota based RV that has been upgraded with the Toyota full floating 1 ton axle and springs.

I live in the hills and need as much tractability as I can get, so I need a locker system for this axle. Manual, automatic, electric, vacuum, willpower, whatever, what is available for this axle?

Thanks!!!

Dave

The One ton should have a 8" third member most likely a V6 / turbo third member. Any 8" locker will work, just make sure you get correct locker for your third member, V6 or 4 cylinder. Also if you will be driving on ice you might want to buy a selectable like the ARB or retro fit a Toyota E-locker.

Good luck. By the way where did you find the full floater axle that you upgraded to? I have heard a long time ago that Toyota would swap the axle for the non full floater due to a recall, not sure if that was true.

Hello,

I believe you are correct, I have an 8" third member.

It is going into a 4 cylinder motorhome, but I am unsure what the original vehicle had, likely a V-6.

I got the axle from a friend, years back, I had wanted to make my S10 a flatbed, I bought the axle and the back half of a 90's Toyota pickup for $50, (No bed, just the frame and axle) and he even bolted on a trailer hitch to it so I could tow it home.

I bought this RV and then realized I had a full floater just sitting around, and I knew that I did good in buying the axle!

I also heard that Toyota was briefly doing an axle swap for RVs back in the 80's, because people were getting hurt using the non full floating axles.

I have to ask, what do you mean 4 cyl third member? What is the difference? Is this why the yoke on the full floating axle has different bolt patterns than the driveshaft? I was thinking about drilling 4 new bolt holes, otherwise I do not know what else to do to make it work...

As already suggested, the ultimate solution (IMHO) is to install a TRD elocker. It's not that difficult and it gives you a selectable locker. They are not cheap however. A new one lists for over $1200 but you can normally get a dealer to order them for $900 or so. You can buy them in 3 different gear ratios (4.10, 4.30 and 4.56) which makes them somewhat cost effective if you need to regear and want a locker (since regearing with parts and labor can cost $400+).

There are lots of threads on here about installs. Just look in the FAQ or search under my name for "posts started" and you can find my install along with links to others.

Hmm my 3rd member resembles the V6. Except, it doesn't have the triangle on the top, it's flat, and it also has an extra fin on the bottom of it (Facing the ground).

I might just have to get the EZ locker, or take the 3rd member out of a junked Toyota with the electronic locker. I'd love to have a selectable locker.

I think the yoke will be strong enough to drill 4 more holes into, right?

If by yoke you mean the flange that the drive shaft bolts to, then yes you can redrill it. I would not suggest a non-selectable locker if you live where there is snow, with all that weight, and 2 wheel drive, you'll be in trouble quick.

Check junkyards for electric lockers, I had mine shipped to me for under $450, I ended up having to regear it, because the yard didn't check the ratio correctly, but fortunately I can do that work myself...

Good luck!, and check the FAQ, I think there's a link or 2 in there about Toyota RVs.
