Just a thought since this is the sort of thing I do for a living...

Also have them figure out the weight and how it will change the ride-height and "ground line" of the vehicle.
If you wanted to get real in-depth, get some info on the shocks and springs and figure out how to change the shocks to achieve the same damping effects.
Of course

I can't tell you what the actual bumper/tow-hitch cost, but I can guarantee it is significantly less than $500.

This sounds like an awesome class. I wish we did stuff like that when I was in HS. Good prep for what they face in college!

I had the first two bumpers turned in today from the kids. They are both quite similar. The rest have a lot more variety. I thought I would pass them along. The rest will be turned in over the next few days and will get posted as well. These two actually turned out pretty good. It was all aesthetics. We didn't have the time to get too heavily into towing, winching, spring rates, shocks, etc. They only had a couple weeks to go from a rough sketch on paper to a finished design.

My Home built:

I'm a intermediate welder - I have to grind if I want it to look okay. Great penetration, but ... I don't weld enough. Think I'll be going thinner wire so my welds don't pile so high. My welder does not have variable heat but presets.

I used a 3/8 inch belt sander for a lot of it. Unbelievable tool.

I had a few more turned in today. I have 3 students that don't want their design posted; so I have to respect their request.

The students who allowed me to post their designs asked for feedback from you guys. So if you see anything worth commenting on feel free. Just remember your writing to high school students so be nice and keep it appropriate. Their last day of school is tomorrow and they will be looking at this thread in class tomorrow. Comment away.

There's some really interesting designs and I'm tempted to borrow ideas for my other build.

In particular I like plate verses tube on 80's (personal preference) but tube definitively has its merits in terms of weight and strength.

My favs from each post are:

#27 like the design of the bottom section

#28 shackle mounts are beefy and stick out far enough to allow you push on something if need be. Also looks like mine as mentioned so it has some cool :)

#34. Well placed receiver. Would stick out far enough to easily install the pin. some real world designs don't let you do this and can be really tight. Id like to see this on a truck

#35 I love the integrated lights Idea and wanted to something with leds in mine but ran out of patience

Also love the center grill protection in the lower pic

#36 minimal but I think would be a strong design. good approach angles

#37's design would have to have removable sections to allow you to remove the grill easily. I really like the returns on the wing portion - has some style! I'v seen similar on rear tube bumpers and have always liked the look

Fun - will anyone get the chance to build one?

#27 blocks too much of the headlights in my opinion - might not even be legal in some states

all of the designs may well accomplish what's required of a stout bumper structurally, but are lacking a bit in style

specifically, in my opinion, they don't do enough to pick up the lines from the grill or hood design - neither of which is rectangular/square but trapezoid, and even if not structurally required, would have the bumper look more at home on the 80

but of course, no matter how nice the design is, if the execution/welding is not top notch, the bumper won't hold up
