humm, what do you think?

Rosco,
gassers are no problem, we live in a free contry (for now).

I was chatting this over just this evening and in the end it came down to the amount of km i put on a year. seriously, other than one or two extended putzs i only put on about 3000 km a year and most of that will be in other diesels i own, this truck will be happy to see 500-1000km in a year.

now if i should turn this into a regular truck and start driving it more and more a diesel swap will make much sense. i was chatting with another buddy driving the 3F and he says the 3F has much more power than the 2F but is really thirsty (sound familar?).

if i did the diesel conversion then the truck will loose one of it's cool factor, the ultra low km...no?

cheers M8

All I can say is Ive got 2 cruisers and a Volvo but I cant get my ass out of the HZJ75. If I go down the shop for milk its got to be the 75:confused::D

I got to admit though the 3F was fast, yes I said fast,on the open road.
Once it got to 110 it wanted to keep going, I once hit 150 between Perth and Kalgoorlie and still had something left before I eased off in the 73:eek:

Have a look at the manifolds and compare it to a 2F if possible,I think that and no smog gear make a big differnce.

Dont lose the carb, they are very very hard to come by here. I sold mine off cheap and wished I hadnt had.
So many have been dumped in the bin after Holley/weber/carter conversions.
Then they realise what a mistake they made and want the carb ,air filter tube ect back

I dont think the fuel consumption will be worse than a US FJ60

Rosco,
thanks for the advice ont eh carb...
i have owned many, many gasser 40s, 45s over the years and it is hard to beat the aisan carb for excellent performance on and especially off the road. a good running aisan carb will keep up with fuel injection even on the steepestof hills and the most severe off camber terrain.

smog... humm, didn't think of that. here in Canada we had very little smog crap to deal with. not like the states. i remember the first US version 40 i bought. i popped the hood and thought "sheet, what is all this crap?"

i know the 2F with 35s and 4.11s would go 90 mph (by the speedo so what is that? 110 mph?) with no real effort. that is scary in a 40!!

i also found that the gassers respond very nicely to a larger exhaust system. i didn't liek the headers though, i found them noisy and took away on the bottom end torque off road (that and they would rust quickly)

after reading about the performance i am getting even more excited to get this rig over here...

Off the mark is ho hum hough:rolleyes:

Wayne,

It is clear to me that you have gone beyond the term "hobby". I think you have now moved on to the word "fetish". I would not be surprised to see you running around in nylons (shudder) or something like that the next time we meet. Congrats on the new rig...

Karl

<shiver> nylons this time of year?!? yah got to be kidding...

tech side of it (so this thread doesn't get moved):
1991
FJ75
3F
H55F
4.11 diffs
FF rear with limited slip

the actual pump info i will supply once the rig arrives here and i can get the part numbers off of it...

yah, but so is a naturaly asperated 1HZ...
;^)
I only had a tired 3F to compare against a freshly rebuilt 1HZ with a rebuilt pump and injectors, but the 1HZ is peppier but shorter in the gears if you know what I mean.
I like to think the 1HZ would win a 200 metre drag race but at the 400 metre mark the 3F would be a nose in front.
Twice a year our local drag track has 4wd night ,might go down and see what a "Z" can pull:grinpimp:

i have never had the privilage to drive a 3F before so i can't compare
i have driven a strong 1HZ and a strong 2F, the 2F has longer legs and is quicker.
a turbo's 1HZ will pull very strong but i am thinking a 2F might just keep up...

it iwll be intereting to see what a 3F will do..
cheers

That truck will haul ass with the pump and tank removed from that truck. A light box and it will be a quick little thing that's for sure.

so on a whim i bought a truck last night. different to say the least.

1991 FJ75 fire truck with an original 8,500 km and 5 speed. i have no idea what to do with it!!
it might make a great advertising rig with Luxury stickers on the doors.
OR
i could take the fire box off and install a tray back... nah, BTDT, didn't like the frustration.
OR
i could find a factory box and install that and have a brand new FJ75 to drive around in.
<yes, i realise the paint needs redoing, very faded>

so just for fun what do you think of this rig?
Cool looking truck you got, maybe you could hire it out at fundraising events and make a few bucks from it.

make an rv and sell it for a fortune.

hey wayne, nice fire truck, let me know when it arrives so i can start little fires near where you live so you can be the neighbourhood hero! o.k. im joking please dont lock me up for saying that. anyways i think its a cool rig and has lots of possibilities, but i think the low km gas engine tells me find an ecentric collector or similar to sell to. even though it has low kliks, i'd still feel guilty beating up a rig with 9000km's on it.

i agree.

I forgot it was low miler. What year did the JDMs get the 3F till?
I think the oz models kept the 3F or was it a 3Fe intil a year after the 80 got the 1FZ FE which would make it 94.

When you think about it its kind of stupid having a petrol powered fire engine.
We banned them years ago.
I guess they were cheaper than HZJ75 and they sat around a lot so they werent worried about fuel costs.

my thoughts is, they used the cheapest utilitarian rig possible for the fire support trucks hence a gasser, no ps, no ac... basic, bare bones cab and chassis...
cheers

Here is a good tech question. The water pump is PTO driven, but would it have the usual Toyota PTO or an after market, modified, or enhanced PTO? I think that it was in 1991 or 1992 that the 3F got EFI. Is this rig EFI?

Karl

the 3F is still the carburator version. (thank the crusier gods, i hate the 3FE.
i will need to wait and see what PTO they used, i suspect it will be the stock setup with a pump up front... but will know better once the truck gets here...
cheers

No PS  Does it have discs on the front :rolleyes:The FSM has a section on front drum rebuilds for 70 series post 90 models:D

wont know till it gets here...
drum have more braking surface than disc but the disc are self adjusting... so to me it doesn't really matter...
